Managing Performance

There may be times when an employee has difficulty in achieving the performance standards required in their job, possibly as a result of suffering an illness or accident or on occasion the job may have changed to such an extent that they no longer have the required skills or aptitude for the role.

In these circumstances the University aims to help employees rather than to discipline them and the Ill Health Procedure or the Performance Management Procedure provide appropriate frameworks within which to determine the right level of support to encourage improvement. This support may include greater supervision or assistance, reviewing workload and targets, additional training or changes to working arrangements, and at times redeployment to a different job.

It is however important to ensure that support is well thought through and provided consistently and fairly, this includes consideration of the appropriate procedures to be used. The HR Partner or HR Adviser for your School / Function will be able to advise and will support managers to deal with often complex situations, their advice should always be sought at an early stage.
