This event is free to attend. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and eligible students can also receive a travel bursary to attend the taster day.
As an attendee, you will participate in two hands-on sessions, providing you with an understanding of the course content and what it's like to actually study these subjects at university level.

Dracula and History
This lecture will explore how historians use popular fiction to better understand the beliefs and concerns of different historical periods. Using Bram Stoker’s classic vampire novel Dracula as a case study, we will examine what the text reveals about late-Victorian attitudes towards migration, gender identity, and technology.
Norwegian Sailors in Britain, 1861-1905
Norwegians came to Victorian Britain in their tens of thousands. Most were in the country only temporarily and the vast majority were sailors. So large was their presence in Britain, a network of churches was set up specifically for them to use. By 1900, there were Norwegian churches in London, Liverpool, Cardiff, and various other ports. They had become interested not only in preaching the gospel to sailors, but also in promoting Norwegian nationhood, culture, and traditions.
This session will explore how and why these organisations fostered a sense of national pride among Norwegian sailors, and what they hoped to achieve by doing so. It will also look at how Norwegians were perceived in Britain, and the relationship between Norwegian and British sailors.
This taster day will be held at our Whiteknights campus and will run from approximately 10:00 to 16:00 (or until 17:00 with an optional campus tour), allowing you time to really immerse yourself in the subject and relevant department.

What should I wear for the taster day?
Wear loose, comfortable clothes and appropriate footwear as we will be touring the university campus.
Can I park on site?
You can park on site for the taster day, but you will need to collect a parking permit and have this displayed in your vehicle for the duration of the event. Parking permits can be collected at the registration point, for more information please email outreach@reading.ac.uk.
Is there somewhere to buy lunch?
We will be providing a free lunch, please make sure you communicate any dietary requirements when you register for the event.
