Summer taster days

The outreach team will run a number of summer taster events in June and July 2017 relating to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) areas. These include:

  • Freedom: Year 12 Politics and Philosophy taster day

  • Food and Nutritional Sciences Summer School

Spectroscopy masterclass

Venue: University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus

Date: Wednesday 28 June 2017

The Spectroscopy Masterclass is a free event and suitable for Year 12 students studying A-level Chemistry who are interested in finding out more about studying Chemistry at university.

The Spectroscopy masterclass will include short talks on Infrared and NMR spectroscopy and Mass spectrometry, a workshop session and instrument visits. After lunch there will be talks on current research and on applying to study Chemistry at the University of Reading.

This event is free of charge but places are limited so we advise early booking. We accept bookings from school groups (with or without teachers) and individuals.  Please complete the relevant application below:

Food and Nutritional Sciences Summer School

Venue: University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus

Date: Wednesday 5 July - Friday 7 July 2017

The Food and Nutritional Sciences Summer School is a free, three day residential summer school for Year 12 students held at the University of Reading.

Students who attend this fully industrially sponsored course will carry out a variety of applied chemistry and biology practicals investigating wide ranging aspects of food science; from flavour technologies to foods as medicine. In addition, students will gain a practical appreciation of food manufacturing, safety, quality control, nutrition and cutting edge research. The summer school runs over three days in July and there is a full social as well as academic program to allow students to really get a taste of university life.

Psychology taster day

Venue: University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus

Date: Thursday 6 July 2017

The Psychology taster day is for Year 12 students interested in finding out more about studying Psychology at university.

During the taster day, pupils will be able to visit our internationally-renowned department and participate in interactive activities, including mini-lectures from current researchers, experimental workshops, and Q&A sessions with our psychology undergraduates. Our taster day aims to give students a flavour of what it might be like to study psychology at degree level, whilst at the same time supporting them in their A-Level studies by sharing our cutting-edge research findings.

Venue: University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus

Date: Wednesday 12 July 2017

An informative and interactive day for A-level students studying Chemistry who are interested in finding out more about studying Pharmacy at university.

During the taster day you will be able to attend lectures and practical workshops where you will get a taste of some of the different subjects you will cover while working towards a degree in Pharmacy. You will also get an opportunity to tour the University of Reading, meet current students and get to experience campus life for the day.

Biology masterclass

Venue: University of Reading, Whiteknights Campus

Date: Friday 14 July 2017

The Biology masterclass is a free event and suitable for Year 12 students studying A-level Biology or Human Biology who are interested in finding out more about studying Biology at university.

During the Biology masterclass students will undertake a practical laboratory session to amplify a fragment of DNA using the technique of Polymerase Chain Reaction. The day-long event will guide participants through the practical stages of extracting and amplifying DNA. Students will gain experience of undertaking extended experiments in a laboratory environment and will develop the practical skills required for biological lab work.
