Our people

Teaching and Learning

Our most valuable asset

At the University of Reading, we are constantly developing our approaches to teaching and learning and creating a relevant and engaging learning environment in which our staff can flourish.

We celebrate and value our staff; they are enthused, well-qualified in their fields and committed to providing the very best education to our students.

Our staff are integral to the success of the University and we regularly recognise their achievements. There are a number of award schemes which reward individuals and their outstanding contributions to teaching and learning, including the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) which celebrates excellent practice and outstanding achievement in learning and teaching in higher education, and the University-run University Teaching Fellowship Scheme (UTFS) which rewards individuals who have demonstrated excellence and contributed to the development of teaching and learning within the University.

Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Education and student experience)

As Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Education and Student Experience), Professor Elizabeth McCrum and Professor Peter Miskell are responsible for ensuring that the University provides an excellent education and campus experience to all of our students and makes significant progress towards its aspiration to be in the top quartile in the UK sector for teaching excellence. They are members of the University Executive Board.

National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS)

The Higher Education Academy (HEA) runs the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS), the purpose of which is to raise the profile of learning and teaching, recognise and celebrate individuals who make an outstanding impact on the student learning experience, and provide a national focus for institutional teaching and learning schemes.

The award supports individuals’ professional development in learning and teaching. Success depends only on excellence and not what stage you are at in your career.

The University has a growing number of National Teaching Fellows, all of whom play an active role in teaching and learning leadership across the University.
