  • Course duration
    Full Time:  3 Years

Gain the confidence to enthuse primary school pupils with a love of English, whilst developing your own knowledge of literature with BA Primary Education with English Specialism (QTS).

This course will enable you to get a job as a primary school teacher following graduation. There is a high demand for specialist primary school teachers and many of our graduates go on to become subject leaders. Furthermore, we are ranked 9th in the UK for Education (Guardian University Guide 2023). and have strong links with schools.

You will divide your time between studying modules on professional skills and curriculum subjects, and developing your knowledge of English. The former will introduce you to the core National Curriculum subjects, including Information and Communications Technology (ICT). You will develop skills essential to the role of a teacher, including leadership, classroom management, and evaluation and assessment. You can then put these skills into practice through professional placements, which take place throughout the course. Additionally you will study professional legal requirements, and investigate the role of the teacher and how children develop.

This course introduces you to both key texts from the past and contemporary texts, for adults and children, in order to explore the relationship between the old and the new. Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to investigate how these texts can influence approaches to literature in a primary classroom. Additionally, a vital component within the English Specialism is to develop key leadership skills in order for you to lead English in primary schools.

Explore how important real-world issues such as gender and identity emerge in literature, and understand the place of children’s literature within the teaching of English in primary schools. Investigate the ways in which literature is categorised and the different values placed on different texts – including how these values influence English language, literature and other media.

Placement

You will have the opportunity to carry out placements throughout this course. These will take place within local schools that the Institute of Education has active relationships with. Whilst there you will be mentored by a teacher and linked to a university tutor, who will provide you with additional support.

During your first year you will attend a weekly placement, which will familiarise you with the daily routine of the classroom and link in with your professional modules. For example, you may have to complete an observation for an assignment.

You will also complete a block placement during each year of the course. You will spend four weeks in a Key Stage 1 (KS1) setting during your first year, seven weeks in a KS2 setting in the second year, and an eight-week placement in a Key Stage of your choice during the final year.

Climate and sustainability education

At the University of Reading we believe that climate and sustainability education is everyone’s responsibility. This is why we have set out our vision that all initial teacher trainees should be able to access training that empowers them to effectively incorporate climate education within their teaching across all levels and subjects as part of our National Climate Education Action Plan.

Across all of our ITT programmes at the Institute of Education, you will learn about:

  • what is happening to our climate, how to help children learn about climate and sustainability in an age-appropriate and accessible way, and how to develop your own positioning as a teacher
  • climate justice, the impact of current and future changes to our environment and climate on ourselves and others and implications for teachers
  • how to translate knowledge and theory into change and personal action through building climate and sustainability education into your planning, teaching, and children’s learning.

The Arts, Children and Education 1: English

Code:

ED1AC2

Convenor:

DR Alison Silby

Summary:

This module will establish students’ understanding of developing children’s literacy skills through texts in the primary classroom. It will include a strong focus upon the notion of what the study of texts means and will look at historical and philosophical perspectives, exploring narrative and poetry in terms of pedagogy and practice. The historical review of literature will ultimately lead to the present moment to consider contemporary issues around the teaching of English (particularly the use of different texts in the classroom). Linked to the current focus on early reading, the module will explore children's engagement in storytelling, including what we can learn from key writers. The module will also explore how the learning environment supports learning and, because children's literature is fundamental to English teaching in primary schools, students will be introduced to a range of children's literature and poetry.

Convenor:

DR Alison Silby

Summary:

This module provides contexts for further investigations into teaching and learning in primary English and the development of a subject leadership role. It offers the opportunity to reflect on the relationship between literature, literacy and the classroom with a particular focus on the interrelationship between the reading/interpretation of a text and its realisation in performance. The module, therefore, offers opportunities for exploring a variety of texts (including Shakespeare) and ‘realising’ them in and across the creative arts through collaborative performances. The module also explores what is contemporary in children’s books, television and films and what should and does educate and entertain children in the twenty first century. The books and films studied will raise questions on how ‘issues’ are raised in children’s books and films. The module will include opportunities to look at majority world authors as a stimulus to design, and trial, teaching materials for a Global Citizenship project.Students will study critical theory in order to engage meaningfully with secondary material.

Code:

ED2MS1

Convenor:

MR James Davies

Summary:

This module is designed to develop trainees’ understanding of the pedagogy and practice of teaching of science, mathematics and ICT/CS education and digital literacy.

The module builds on the content of related modules undertaken in the first year of the BA Ed programme. It teaches the principles of how children learn in science and mathematics as well as in ICT/CS by developing an understanding of the value of providing children with opportunities for practical experiences, problem solving, reasoning and enquiry in order to enable progression. The focus will be on how to construct child-centred, meaningful contexts that engage children’s interest and curiosity.

Students will be given an overview of progression from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 in both concept development and scientific enquiry skills. In mathematics the data handling cycle will be explored in depth. The role of ICT within the teaching and learning of mathematics will be developed. In ICT/CS trainees’ programming skills will develop further as well as their understanding and skills of the role of data handling in the revised ICT/CS curriculum.

Summary:

This module builds on ED1PS1 as the trainees continue their journey towards QTS. They become skilled at planning for progression across sequences of lessons and learn how to craft a creative and innovative curriculum experience, drawing on the National Curriculum and beyond. The effect of social, religious, cultural or linguistic influences is acknowledged and strategies for working with children with diverse needs are identified. Assessment is established as key to effective learning and is embedded in trainees’ practice as they work towards more independence in their teaching. Ways of using assessment thoughtfully to create a positive classroom learning culture are also discussed. Trainees explore their legal responsibilities, including safeguarding, and their continuing behaviour management training links in with this and the role that trauma plays. As in the first Professional Studies module, the role of the trainee as a reflective practitioner underpins all work undertaken as each trainee analyses progress thus far and considers areas for personal research.

MRS Stephanie Sharp

Summary:

This module builds on the exploration of children’s literature from previous modules. With a focus on fantasy and realism students will investigate how literature is categorised and compare the value placed on different types of texts. As technology continues to impact on reading, the module also explores the concept of the book as a physical object and compares its value against other formats.

For children to succeed in any area of life they require a range of skills, some of the most fundamental being their ability to speak, listen, read and write. I was inspired to choose a teaching degree with a specialism in English to help me become outstanding at transforming these vital skills to children
