Take part in climate and sustainability work

As a University of Reading student, there are many ways that you can get involved and help us tackle key issues in climate and sustainability.

As well as work experience and volunteering opportunities, you can take advantage of events, societies, and learning programmes that all help to develop your sustainability skills and knowledge.

Student societies

Our students have set up a variety of societies with an environmental sustainability focus, including:

Sustainable Action Award

The Reading Experience and Development (RED) Sustainable Action Award will challenge you to think about the wide-ranging ways you can support the development of a sustainable world. You'll be supported to develop your understanding of sustainability issues and take action to address them. This skills-based award is a fantastic way to boost your employability and showcase your dedication and commitment.

Reading Internship Scheme

Our student internship opportunities are updated regularly and have included roles specifically related to sustainability, as well as opportunities at organisations with an environmental sustainability focus.

Volunteering

Take part in volunteering projects related to environmental sustainability. You could support ZSL or RSPB with conservation activities, lend your time to animal welfare organisations, help develop insect-friendly environments, promote sustainability in local communities, and much more.

Placements

We offer our students a range of career and placement events, fairs, and workshops related to sustainability, as well as the opportunity to search for related vacancies. Students can access support and guidance related to the application process, identifying their strengths, and addressing any CV gaps.

UROP

Our Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) enables you to develop critical research skills while examining sustainability issues in depth. Previous opportunities have investigated food waste, carbon sequestration, energy efficiency, plant distribution, and building retrofits, to name just a few.

Student Sustainability Summit

Reading Students' Union runs Reading University Student Sustainability Summit (RUSSS). The most recent event featured discussions of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, keynote presentations from University and external speakers, and discussions between students of sustainability ideas and interests.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

We're working to embed ESD, appropriate to the discipline, into our courses. In addition, we aim to ensure that all of our students can access additional learning on climate change so that they're empowered with the skills and knowledge needed to help build a sustainable future for all.

Doing UoR bit

Our Doing UoR Bit online platform offers rewards and prizes for taking steps to increase sustainability and wellbeing. This includes actions such as saving energy and water, thinking about the environmental impact of dietary choices, and opting for active travel.
