Fees for home students

Find a course

Postgraduate tuition fees

Standard fees for UK students starting in 2022/23 studying full-time are:

  • £9,250 a year for non-laboratory courses (Band 1)
  • £10,550 a year for subjects with significant laboratory study or workshop content (Band 2).

Although the majority of the University’s courses are charged at the standard Band 1 or Band 2 level, certain courses attract a premium course fee. These include Henley Business School courses. Please visit the Henley Business School website for full information.

Part-time fees are calculated at 50% of the standard fee, or pro rata for modular programmes.

A number of our courses will also require a deposit of £1,000 to be paid in order to secure your place. This will be stated on your offer of admission should it be required.

In the majority of cases, fees are payable in two instalments: 50% on enrolment and 50% at the start of the second term of your studies. If you are approved for a UK government master’s loan, you can pay your tuition fees in three instalments.

Postgraduate research

Fees for postgraduate research students can be found on our Graduate School website.

Alumni discount

If you completed your undergraduate degree with us, you're entitled to a discount on your master's degree at Reading. You'll automatically receive £1,500 off the cost of your full-time tuition fees, or if you're a part-time student studying over two years, you'll receive a £750 discount each year.

If you choose to move onto a programme with Henley Business School, and pay your deposit by 1 May 2022, you'll receive a £3,000 alumni discount.

Fees policy for students

Find out more about tuition fees and your financial obligations as a student by reading the University's Fees Policy.

Postgraduate fees statement

Unless stated otherwise, all fees quoted on postgraduate course and research pages are for the academic year 2022/23. Full fee information will be detailed in any offer letter sent out.

Funding support for home students

Most postgraduate students fund their studies through a mixture of government loans, savings, part-time work, and any scholarships and bursaries they are awarded.

You can currently borrow up to £11,570 through a repayable government loan scheme for master’s programmes starting on or after 1 August 2021. Loans are available for students:

  • under the age of 60
  • who don’t already have a master’s qualification or a higher level qualification, such as a PhD.

Please visit the government website for more information.

We also have an extensive range of master's scholarships available. Find out more on our master's scholarship page.

There is also a plentiful supply of part-time work available on campus which can help with living costs. See Campus Jobs for more information.

PGCE fee updates

In January 2017, the government approved legislation lifting the maximum tuition fee from £9,000 to £9,250 per year for full-time UK undergraduates in the 2017/18 academic year. This fee will remain in place for the 2021/22 academic year.

In line with this legislation, the University raised PGCE tuition fees to £9,250 and School Direct fees by the same percentage:
