Residents join National Meadows Day walks in Shinfield
09 July 2026
Around 80 people came together in Shinfield on Saturday 4 July to mark National Meadows Day, with guided walks through Langley Mead and the wider green spaces at School Green and Shinfield Ridge.
The free event, held at Langley Mead SANG on the banks of the River Loddon, was organised by the University of Reading, which owns and manages the site. Visitors were invited to explore the 18-hectare nature reserve and learn about its ongoing restoration from agricultural land to a traditional floodplain meadow habitat.
Two guided walks ran throughout the day, including a new route connecting Langley Mead with School Green and Shinfield Ridge, allowing visitors to see how the wider network of green spaces supports local wildlife. Wildlife spotter sheets were also available for families.
Molli Cleaver, Community Engagement Manager at the University of Reading, said: "It was brilliant to see so many people come out and explore the meadows on National Meadows Day.
“Events like this are a real reminder of how much the local community values these green spaces, and it was wonderful to welcome visitors to Langley Mead for a day of walks, wildlife-spotting and learning more about what we're doing to restore this beautiful site."
Langley Mead is open to the public throughout the year. Find out more about Langley Mead.
