Student schemes
The Student Recruitment and Outreach office manage a number of student schemes that can help students, teachers and advisors to understand what it's like to study at the University of Reading. These schemes are outlined below:
Reading student ambassadors
Student ambassadors are drawn from current undergraduates and take part in open days, campus tours and UCAS fairs, as well as visiting schools. For more information visit the student ambassadors page or contact us at outreach@reading.ac.uk.
Reading student tutors
Every year the University places around 200 volunteer student tutors in local schools. Is your school involved yet? See the student tutors page to find out more about the scheme and how you can apply, or contact Julia Hodgson, Student Tutoring Coordinator, at j.m.hodgson@reading.ac.uk.
Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme
The Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme (UAS) Chemistry Ambassadors was launched in 2002 to encourage more pupils to take up STEM subjects in schools and more graduates to teach these subjects. A popular and successful way of allowing undergraduates to explore the teaching profession at first hand by gaining experience in local schools, the UAS scheme is a successful and popular way for Schools to develop links with the University.
Teachers interested in the scheme should contact Dr Elizabeth Page e.m.page@reading.ac.uk or see the UAS web site for more background information.
Student mentors
Student mentors play an important part in our outreach activity. From 2012 we will be recruiting a dedicated team of mentors to support, in the first instance, those individuals engaging in our longer-term transition schemes. Acting as a direct link in to UKHE by giving a personal take on student life at Reading and by engaging in wider dialogue on aspects of HE, the mentors will operate as 'buddies' both working face-to-face and conversing online through our e-mentoring mechanism.
For more information on our mentors, please contact Laura Poplett, Student Recruitment and Access Officer, at: l.j.poplett@reading.ac.uk.
