COVID-19 update

Find out about how we'll be delivering our courses in 2020.

This BA Accounting and Management programme combines two key areas of business to prepare you for a successful future career.

Henley Business School is ranked 19th in the UK for Accounting and Finance (The Times and The Sunday Times University Guide, 2020).

Accountancy isn't just about being good at numbers. It’s about being able to analyse and interpret information, spot trends, identify issues and opportunities, and communicate complex ideas in a clear and concise manner.

This multidisciplinary degree examines a range of issues from both an accounting and a business perspective, as well as exploring the interrelationships between the professions of accountancy and management.

The accountancy element covers the core areas of financial reporting, management accounting and business finance.

The management element will enable you to explore areas such as marketing, organisational behaviour, strategy, information systems, human resource management, entrepreneurship and ethics.

After the first year, a range of optional management and finance modules will allow you to tailor your degree to your areas of interest. The second and final years are designed to build on the commercial and academic knowledge you have already acquired and certain modules on this degree are professionally accredited, meaning you can claim exemptions from professional accountancy exams in the future if you achieve the required grades.

This course offers the opportunity to apply for credit for prior learning from three major accounting bodies: ICAEW, ACCA and CIMA.

Placement

All of our undergraduate degree programmes in accounting, business and management provide you with the opportunity to take a one-year industry placement between your second and final year of study, which we encourage students to do.

Our careers team will provide you with expert advice and guidance – from helping choosing the right industry placement through to supporting you while working during your third year. To support you while applying we provide workshops covering all the main selection methods used by employers: competency interview training; CVs, cover letters and application forms; and drop-in clinics.

A successful industry placement can also lead to a job offer with your placement company upon graduation. You will also have lots of opportunities to develop excellent professional contacts that will stand you in good stead for the future.

Organisations we have worked with in the past include 3M, Aldi, BMW, British Airways, Cisco Systems, Deloitte, Disney, Dyson, Ford Motor Company, Fujitsu, GE, GlaxoSmithKline, Goldman Sachs, Grant Thornton, Hewlett Packard, HSBC, Hyundai, IBM, Intel, Jaguar Land Rover, Kimberley Clark, KPMG, Lilly, Lloyds TSB, L’Oréal, Marks & Spencer, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Nissan, PepsiCo, PwC, Symantec, Tesco, Unilever, Verizon and Waitrose.

Business Strategy

Code:

MM276

Convenor:

DR Joseph Lane

Summary:

A firm’s strategy answers three fundamental questions: Where should the firm compete? How should it compete to win? How will it continue to win in the long run? Corresponding to these three elements, effective strategists excel at three tasks. First, strategists can identify the factors within the industry environment that influence a firm’s ability to create competitive advantage and outperform rivals. Second, strategists analyse how to configure a firm’s internal resources and activities to increase the value the firm creates and captures so as to give it competitive advantage over rivals. The third distinctive job of the strategist is to sustain the advantage of a company over time in the face of competitive dynamics. The module is the first of a sequence of three strategy modules that builds on the introduction to strategy in module MM1F12-Markets, Marketing and Strategy. MM276 focuses on business strategy (also referred to as competitive strategy). Business strategy is concerned with how firms develop competitive advantage to outperform the averages in its industry and how it sustains this over the long run. The module introduces research-based theories, frameworks, concepts, tools and techniques of strategic management to prepare you for each of the strategist’s three jobs.

Summary:

This is a foundation module in Marketing. It intends to provide students with an overview of Marketing as an academic subject, a key area of corporate activity and a fundamental component of a business strategy. The module discusses and analyses marketing theories, as well as strategic marketing tools and techniques used in the business world. Students are encouraged to engage actively and critically with the theoretical and empirical contents of the module through interactive lectures and small-group tutorials. Moreover, students are expected to demonstrate an ability to integrate marketing theories, strategic tools and business practice in their coursework and exam papers.

The module addresses the essential analyses required to develop a marketing strategy, including assessing the competitive arena, customers, market trends and organisational capabilities. The core decisions within marketing strategy are explored, including the selection of opportunities to pursue, target market selection, creating a competitive advantage and brand positioning. The execution of a marketing strategy through the ingredients of the marketing mix is also over-viewed. Increasingly leadership teams of businesses are harnessing these marketing analyses and marketing strategy concepts, as they seek to update their corporate strategies, enhance shareholder value and strive to compete successfully in growth markets.

Convenor:

DR Ekililu Salifu

Summary:

This module builds on the concepts and techniques of management accounting introduced in AC107 and AC220 or AC 208. Management accounting may be seen as a way of providing information in three main areas: costing, decision-making, and planning and control. The emphasis of this module will mainly be on the last two areas (i.e., decision making and planning and control). In reality, however, it is often difficult to separate any one area from the other two. For example, standard costing provides costing information which is then used as a tool for planning and control.

Fees

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £9,250* per year

New international students: £19,500 per year

*UK/Republic of Ireland fee changes

UK/Republic of Ireland undergraduate tuition fees are regulated by the UK government. These fees are subject to parliamentary approval and any decision on raising the tuition fees cap for new UK students would require the formal approval of both Houses of Parliament before it becomes law.

EU student fees

With effect from 1 August 2021, new EU students will pay international tuition fees. For exceptions, please read the UK government’s guidance for EU students.

Additional costs

Some courses will require additional payments for field trips and extra resources. You will also need to budget for your accommodation and living costs. See our information on living costs for more details.

Financial support for your studies

You may be eligible for a scholarship or bursary to help pay for your study. Students from the UK may also be eligible for a student loan to help cover these costs. See our fees and funding information for more information on what's available.
