Structure

  • Year 1

The PGCert in Healthcare Education is a one-year, part-time programme worth 60 credits at Level 7. The programme is designed to fit alongside professional practice and is structured across three compulsory modules, studied sequentially across the academic year.

Each module runs in a single period, with modules delivered in the autumn, spring and summer and includes a blend of face-to-face teaching and online learning. Students are required to attend three compulsory taught days per module, supported by guided independent study and assessment tasks.

Each module carries an approximate time commitment of 200 hours, which includes:

  • face-to-face teaching sessions
  • independent and directed reading
  • preparation tasks before and after taught days
  • formative assessment activities
  • preparation and completion of summative assessments.

Before the start of the programme, all students attend a compulsory induction and study skills day, which includes enrolment, an introduction to the programme structure, practical information, and guidance on academic writing and study support.

EDM186 – The Professional Self and Healthcare

This module focuses on the healthcare educator as a professional practitioner. You will critically explore your own behaviours, values and professional identity within healthcare settings and develop reflective skills to support your ongoing professional development.

The module introduces theoretical perspectives on behaviour, identity and learning relationships and supports you to apply these concepts to your own practice as an educator.

Assessment:

  • reflective accounts (1,500 words) (30%)
  • written assignment/essay (3,000 words) (70%).

Please note that assessment methods may be subject to change in response to student feedback and ongoing programme development.

EDM185 – Teaching and Learning in Healthcare

This module provides an overview of key theories of learning and pedagogy and explores how these can be applied to teaching practice in healthcare contexts. You will examine how learning is planned, delivered and assessed and develop practical skills to support effective teaching in clinical and educational environments.

The module encourages critical reflection on your own teaching practice and supports the development of inclusive, accessible and engaging learning experiences.

Assessment:

  • two 1,000-word reflective accounts based on teaching or learning experiences (50%)
  • one 2,000-word reflective and critical analysis of a planned teaching session (with session plan included as an appendix) (50%).

EDM189 – Interprofessional Collaboration and Healthcare

This module focuses on interprofessional working within healthcare education and practice. You will explore how teams function across professional boundaries and consider the wider regulatory, organisational and professional contexts that shape healthcare education.

The module supports you to identify and critically analyse a current, multidisciplinary issue within your workplace, drawing on relevant theory and evidence to propose informed and practical solutions.

Assessment:

A 4,500-word report focusing on a current, multidisciplinary workplace issue.

Careers

The PGCert in Healthcare Education is designed for healthcare professionals who have, or are developing, a role in education, training and professional development within healthcare settings.

The programme supports career development for professionals working across primary and secondary care, including those with responsibility for the training, supervision, development or appraisal of other healthcare staff such as:

  • allied health professionals
  • pharmacists
  • nurses and doctors.

Students on the programme come from a wide range of professional roles. Recent cohorts have included nurse practice educators, Foundation Year doctors, clinical practice nurses, consultants, GPs, associate specialists and clinical leads, working across disciplines such as:

  • oncology
  • gynaecology
  • rheumatology
  • anaesthesiology
  • midwifery
  • intensive care.

Through developing skills in teaching, assessment, reflective practice and interprofessional collaboration, graduates are well placed to:

  • enhance their effectiveness as clinical educators, supervisors and mentors
  • take on or strengthen formal education and training responsibilities
  • contribute to the design, delivery and evaluation of healthcare education programmes
  • support interprofessional learning and collaborative practice.

The multidisciplinary nature of the programme also provides opportunities to build professional networks and learn alongside colleagues from medical, nursing, pharmacy and allied health backgrounds.

On successful completion, graduates are eligible to apply for Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).

Before applying, please make sure you have completed all of the documents listed in the entry requirements section.

I would absolutely recommend this course - it's challenging, but in the best possible way. It not only deepens your understanding of healthcare education but also equips you to engage with learners as individuals, making your teaching more inclusive and effective. In my experience, it stands out as one of the best healthcare education courses available.
