Mathematics
Mathematics is essential to modern society, from the development of new technologies to the numerical modelling of financial systems.
This fascinating subject will appeal to anyone who enjoys problem-solving and wants to hone their analytical skills.
You can study mathematics as a single honours degree or combine it with other subjects, such as economics, meteorology, finance and investment banking, computer science or statistics. Our degrees contain numerous optional modules, so you will be able to tailor your course to match your strengths, interests and ambitions.
All of our courses enable you to learn coding and programming skills. The world is increasingly reliant on computing and digital information, and the digital economy is growing rapidly in the UK and internationally, so graduates with these skills are in high demand from employers.
You will benefit from learning from staff who are passionate about the subject, as well as being experts in their diverse fields with experience in research, teaching and consultancy in the UK and overseas. We are among the top 10 UK universities, and top 100 in the world, for Physical Sciences (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 by Subject, Physical Sciences. The University of Reading is ranked 81st in the world and is the 8th highest university in the UK).
You'll learn in a thriving research environment, where 98% of our research is world leading or internationally excellent, and 100% of our research impact has been classed outstanding or very considerable (Research Excellence Framework 2021, combining 4* and 3* submissions – Mathematical Sciences). Staff within the department have also been awarded prizes such as the highly prestigious Whitehead prize and Zemánek prize.
Our research includes the mathematics of planet Earth, medical statistics, numerical analysis, mathematical physics and biology, pure and applicable analysis.
You will receive plenty of support to help you get the most out of your studies, including:
- small-group problem-solving tutorials, peer-assisted learning, and materials to help you manage the transition to university-level mathematics
- dedicated support to help you gain a relevant industry placement, or to apply for summer research work through the University's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme
- the Department's staff–student forums and the student teaching and learning group, which enable you to have a direct input into the student experience.
Most of our courses are accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, the body that awards Chartered Mathematician status. For students on BSc accredited courses, subsequent postgraduate training will be needed in order to meet the educational requirements of Chartered Mathematician status, while those completing MMath courses will meet the educational requirements following graduation. Subsequent experience will be needed in both cases before applying to register as a Chartered Mathematician.
