A new report details the diverse contributions of the University of Reading across research, teaching, engagement and operations in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The report, ‘Global Reading, Global Goals’, highlights how the University advocates internally and externally to build partnerships that advance the 17 SDGs, which aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all.
"At all levels, the University of Reading is committed to advancing the SDGs through our world-class research, teaching, operations and public engagement," said Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
“We know that many through individual students and academics, as well in groups and departments, the University is a leading contributor to the effort for sustainable development. But this report highlights how we are acting collectively, as an institution, to support the global goals in partnership across and beyond the University of Reading.
“Our University Strategy already includes ‘sustainability’ as one of our core principles, and this assessment demonstrates the detail of how we are backing the United Nations-led mission for sustainable global development.”
The report highlights how the University of Reading is supporting partnerships for the goals across all 17 areas outlined by the United Nations. Among the 17, examples include:
- SDG 13 Climate Action: Reading climate scientists contributed extensively to the latest IPCC climate report. The University has set a target to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
- SDG 14 Life Below Water: Researchers monitor local water quality and land management through the Loddon Observatory community project.
- SDG 4 Quality Education: Over 180 students graduate each year from Reading's primary school teacher training courses, bolstering the flow of skilled graduate teachers in Berkshire
- SDG 5 Gender Equality: The University holds an Athena SWAN institutional Silver Award for advancing gender equality.
- SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals: Reading experts collaborate internationally, including partnerships to build climate resilience in Africa.
Professor Yaqoob added: "As a leading UK and global university, and a key institution in our region, we are transforming lives through academic and personal excellence.
"We are listening to our communities, working with experts and people with lived experience to bring societal and educational improvements."
