University of Reading appearing in news media including TV and radio

Warmer UK temperatures: Sky News, The Independent, Yahoo! News, Heart, Capital and other news sites quote Professor Nigel Arnell (Meteorology) on increasing UK temperatures and also on how extreme heat could impact summer holidays. Professor Arnell was also quoted in Metro and The World News, explaining that dry conditions and wind are the biggest factors that will impact the speed that wildfires spread at.

Heatwaves: Professor Richard Allan (Meteorology) was interviewed by BBC World, (also aired on BBC News Channel) about how human made climate change has contributed to recent heatwaves around the world. His comments were picked up by BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Radio 2, BBC York, BBC Manchester, BBC Scotland, BBC Three Counties, BBC Lancashire, BBC Suffolk, BBC Leeds, BBC Berkshire and many other regional stations, plus New York station WNET-TV. Professor Allan is also quoted in CNN World, AccuWeather, Egypt Independent, KVIA-TV, N1 Srbija, MTV Lebanon, Head Topics, Daily Journal Online, and Daily-Sun on how fluctuating weather patterns determine the location and timing of the recent heatwaves.

#PlanetPartners: working with global partners to protect the environment  

  • Professor Adrian Palmer (Henley Business School) spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live about UK tourism since the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Dr Jon Robson (Meteorology) is mentioned in The Times (also in print) and New Scientist in response to a study that warns of a vital Atlantic Ocean current collapsing sooner than previously thought. His expert comment is featured in Foreign Affairs.  
  • Professor Liz Stephens (Meteorology) is quoted in the Daily Mail and the Irish and Scottish Daily Mail (available in print - request print copy) on the recent heatwave not being possible without manmade climate change. Read our expert comment.  
  • Dr Akshay Deoras (Meteorology) was interviewed by France24 over the weekend talking about extreme heat in Europe and the USA. He is also quoted in The Hindustan Times on flooding risk in Mumbai.
  • Phys.org reports on a study involving the University, which found that 90% of space weather experts said that without accurate forecasting of space weather, Earth would suffer serious damage to its infrastructure.   • Professor Hannah Cloke (Meterology/ Geography) is quoted in this Wild Hunt article about naming heatwaves.
  • Earth and Space Science News interviewed Professor Ed Hawkins (Meteorology), creator of the climate stripes, on communicating a changing climate. Find out more about the climate stripes.
  • WiredGov mentions that Professor Tom Oliver (Ecology) is a member of the POST Board. 
  • An Edie.net article on decarbonising air travel references Reading research, which found that prioritising minimisation of fuel burn over airspeed could reduce emissions.
  • Next Avenue reports that a recent study from the University of Reading found evidence that climate change is affecting air turbulence.  
  • Yahoo! News, WSB-TV, WPXI-TV, WFTV-TV and Aol. quote Professor Paul Williams (Meteorology) on extreme heat making it more difficult for planes to take off.  Professor Williams is also quoted in The New Zealand Herald for a piece on how climate change is impacting the aviation industry.

  • Dr Darius Widera’s (Pharmacy) Conversation article on the dangers of rogue clinics selling stem cells therapies is republished by Scroll.
  • BBC Radio Berkshire interviewed Visiting Research Fellow Dr Jonathan Rudge (Biological Sciences) on research about donanemab, which is used for patients with Alzheimer’s. 
  • Professor Claire Williams (Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences) is quoted in Knowridge, on the beneficial impact of blueberries for health purposes. Read our news story.

  • The Telegraph, Finanz Nachrichten, Business Times, StreetInsider and ADVFN report on how Apple has been accused of secretly striking a deal which means its products on Amazon are artificially high, quoting Professor Christine Riefa (Law) on the ‘underhand tactics’.  
  • A Conversation article by Dr Dominic Lees (Film, Theatre and Television) on why actors are worried about AI is republished by TechExplore.

Food and farming:

  • Professor Richard Tiffin (Agrimetrics) is quoted in this Nation of Change article on vegan diets and why they are good for the environment.
