COVID-19: expert comment on the pandemic

  • Dr Jane Parker (Food) is quoted by the Telegraph on parosmia - where the sense of smell is distorted - for an article on long-Covid symptoms.
  • Dr Simon Clarke (Biological Sciences) was quoted in The Times (print also) on an alleged meeting between anti-vaccine campaigners and Conservative MP Sir Graham Brady; in the Evening Standard, Yahoo!, MSN and Asian Voice on a predicted fourth wave, likely to be caused by children bringing the virus home from school; in New Scientist (print) on vaccine efficacy;  and in Medscape on new Covid-19 guidelines for hospitals.
  • Coverage of a possible Covid treatment derived from the University's Fifi the llama was reported in Swindon Advertiser (print). 

#PlanetPartners: working with global partners to protect the environment 

  • Professor Peter Clark (Meteorology) was quoted in The Times (print also), commenting on new AI forecasting technology. Professor Clark and Dr Rob Thompson (Meteorology) both feature in this Wired article covering the same topic.
  • Wokingham Today and Reading Today report on the climate warming stripes being featured in a London Fashion Week catwalk show. Read our news story.
  • Comments from UoR scientists about carbon emissions from airports were reported by Al Khalee Today.
  • Dr Ella Gilbert (Meteorology) discussed a study that she conducted on one of the Antarctic shelves with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. 
  • Volcanologist Katie Chamberlain, who previously worked at the University of Reading, discussed volcanic eruptions in Ireland with BBC Radio Berkshire. 

#UniForReading: reaffirming our role as a civic university 

  • An event in collaboration with Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) Community Champions titled "Do Black Lives Matter?" will be held as part of Reading's Black History Month, reported by Reading Borough Council and Reading.co.uk.

  • Professor Dominik Zaum (Politics) spoke to The World Today on Sunday on Germany's federal election.
  • Berkshire Live quoted a ‘University of Reading expert' (Dr Tara Pirie, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) for a story about the possibility of a large cat being on the loose in the area. 
  • President of the UoR's FemSoc Poppy Lindsey was quoted in BerkshireLive on the safety of women following the deaths of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa.
  • Professor Andrew Kakabadse (Henley Business School) is quoted by HR Magazine on new reporting requirements which quantify culture. Professor Kakabadse was also interviewed by Board Intelligence.
  • Dr Mark Shanahan (Politics) discussed the cause of Britain's fuel crisis in Al Jazeera. The article also appears in MSN and other news aggregation sites.
  • A survey conducted by Henley Business School found that black women aged 45 and above who work in the public sector are the most disadvantaged workers in the UK, by The Voice. 
  • The University was mentioned in the Daily Mail as part of Up New Generation documentary star Orala Johnson's academic past. 
  • Doncaster Free Press reported that Michael Murray, a former student at the University of Reading, is set to take over Frasers' Group.
  • Professor David Leake (Biomedical Sciences) explained to the Basingstoke Observer (print) the potential that an antioxidant drug has to prevent heart attacks and strokes. 
  • Professor Keith Shine (Meteorology) is quoted by India Education Dairy on having been recently elected as an American Geophysical Union Fellow. Read our news story.
