Architecture
Are you creative and ambitious? Would you like to build a successful career within the global building design industry? Then our BSc Architecture degree is the programme for you.
The University of Reading’s School of Architecture opened to students in September 2016. As a brand new School, we have been able to work alongside industry to develop an Honours degree course which is designed to prepare you for the architectural profession of tomorrow. We are the joint fifth-highest ranking UK university for Architecture/Built Environment in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2018.
Our teaching and learning facilities include a remodelled historic building with dedicated studio space available to use seven days a week. As well as valuing traditional drawing and visualisation, we place a strong emphasis on digital technologies, and you will have access to a purpose-built 3D immersive digital design environment.
Our team combines vast professional experience with cutting-edge academic research to give you the best of all worlds. The University of Reading is ranked 3rd in the UK for research impact in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning in the Times Higher Education Institutions Ranked by Subject, 2014, based on its analysis of REF 2014. Leading architectural practices and major construction companies are working with us to support their own workforce development – meaning that you will often be learning alongside and networking with potential employers and mentors.
You will also have the opportunity to enhance your studies by working on live projects with our industry partners, and attending field trips in the UK and abroad.
As part of our fourth cohort joining the BSc Architecture course in 2019, you will have the opportunity of securing an annual £1,000 scholarship for each of the three years of the undergraduate degree.*
Your first degree is Part 1 of the three-stage journey to becoming an architect. From 2020, we will also offer a two-year Master's in Architecture (Part 2), enabling you to take the next step towards becoming a fully qualified architect and will also support students through the final part of their training in practice (Part 3).
The Architects Registration Board (ARB) has prescribed our BSc (Hons) Architecture degree under the Architects Act 1997. One of the requirements for gaining a professional architecture qualification is to study on a prescribed course. Our degree is also a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Part 1 candidate course. Once our first cohort graduate in 2019 we will have a full RIBA validation visit.
