Girlguiding wellbeing badges created with Reading expertise
31 July 2025
Girlguiding has launched three new wellbeing badges, in collaboration with a children’s mental health expert from the University of Reading.
Professor Stella Chan, from the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, worked closely with the youth organisation to develop the ‘Journaling’ badge for Guides (aged 10-14), and the ‘Courage’ and ‘Laughter’ badges for Rainbows (aged 4-7).
Professor Chan's expertise in child development and wellbeing helped shape activities that will effectively support girls' confidence, emotional literacy and mental health while remaining engaging and age-appropriate.
Professor Chan said: “We know from research that teenage girls and young women are significantly more at risk of developing depression and anxiety. Equipping them with knowledge, skills, and confidence to look after their wellbeing from an early age is of paramount importance.
“Working with Girlguiding has been incredibly rewarding. I’m encouraged by the girls’ enthusiasm about activities that combine fun with genuine developmental benefits.
“The Journaling badge helps Guides explore their thoughts and feelings in a creative way, while the Courage and Laughter badges, for younger members, focus on building resilience and joy.
“These aren't just activities, they're evidence-based approaches to supporting young people's wellbeing, wrapped up in engaging, age-appropriate challenges that girls genuinely want to do.”
Rainbows will learn to find their courage and know that trying new things doesn’t have to be scary. They can also giggle their way to the laughter badge.
Guides will learn to explore and process their internal thoughts and feelings through creative journalling.
Jean Oberlander of Girlguiding said, "It was an absolute pleasure to work with Professor Chan and the University of Reading on our new interest badge project.
"The team brought fantastic expertise and professionalism combined with genuine passion for supporting girls' wellbeing and mental health – and Professor Chan truly understood Girlguiding and our values."
Professor Chan was one of seven expert partners who contributed to the development of new badges.
