The latest research from NHS England indicates that one in five children and young people has a probable mental health disorder. Why has there been this explosion and what can be done about it?
In this public talk, Professor Stella Chan will discuss the latest research and clinical perspectives and reflect on why innovations for young people’s mental health have lagged behind those for adults. Her research has a strong focus on identifying the biological and psychosocial risk and resilience factors that affect young people. She will also highlight some of the interventions that are being developed at the University, building bridges between researchers and practitioners and involving young people as active ‘citizen scientists’.
Professor Stella Chan is the Research Lead of the Charlie Waller Institute and the Anxiety and Depression in Children and Young People (AnDY) research clinic at the University of Reading. She is a clinical psychologist with a doctorate in Experimental Psychology and a professional doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Stella leads a number of research programmes, with funding from the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council, among others. She is the Founder of the Reading Resilience Network launched in partnership with Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, developing interventions in the local area. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the British Psychological Society. Her work is regularly featured in national newspapers and magazines specialising in mental wellbeing. She serves on expert advisory committees in the UK and Belgium, as well as providing consultancy and working with a wide network of public and third sector organisations.
