Fees and funding for UK students
Undergraduate

Find a course

Undergraduate students

Tuition fees for 2022/23 and 2023/24 entry are £9,250 per year.

You can apply for a government tuition fee loan to cover the cost of your degree. If you’re eligible for funding through Student Finance authorities – which most UK students will be – you don’t have to pay any tuition fees upfront. Check your eligibility.

You won’t start repaying your student loan until you’ve left education and have started earning more than the repayment threshold, which is currently £27,295 a year (from April 2021). Visit the government website for the latest information on repaying your loan.

Your tuition fees will be fixed at the same level for the standard duration of your course, so there will be no year-on-year increase during your studies.

Information for EU students

With effect from 1 August 2021, new EU students will pay international tuition fees. For exceptions, please read the UK government's guidance for EU students.

EU students starting their studies on or before 31 July 2021 will pay the same fees and have the same eligibility for loans and grants as UK home students for the duration of their course.

This information was last updated: 4 April 2022.

Fees policy for students

Additional course-related costs

For information about any additional course-related costs, please visit our Additional Course Costs page.

Government funding

UK students can get government loans to help towards their living costs, known as ‘maintenance loans’. If you choose to take out both a fees loan and a maintenance loan, these will be rolled together and repaid only after graduation through the tax system, as a proportion of your income over £25,000.

You may be eligible for other grants and bursaries, depending on your circumstances. For example, there is additional support for:

  • students with disabilities
  • students with children
  • students with other dependants (for example, an adult you care for)
  • students doing a course in speech and language therapy.
  • Student Finance England
  • Student Finance Wales
  • Student Awards Agency for Scotland
  • Student Finance Northern Ireland
  • Jersey
  • Guernsey
  • Isle of Man
  • Students from other EU countries

Placement year/study abroad fees

If you spend a full academic year studying abroad or working on a placement as part of your degree, you’ll only pay partial tuition during the year away from Reading. This is currently set at 15% of the normal tuition fee and applies to home and international students.

You’ll still need to budget for local living costs (such as accommodation, food, travel, visa fees and medical insurance), which may be more expensive if you spend the year abroad. Home-fee students can apply to be considered for a placement bursary to help with expenses.

This applies only to situations where the full year is spent abroad or on placement. Where only a part of the year is spent abroad or on placement, the full tuition fee is payable to the University of Reading as normal.

The Reading Bursary

The Reading Bursary is worth up to £1,100 and will be given in the form of a cash bursary or a partial fee reduction. It is available for enrolled, eligible full-time undergraduate students from England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland whose household income falls below £27,000.

Eligible students will receive a bursary of £1,100 and can choose to receive it as a cash bursary or a partial tuition fee waiver. The Reading Bursary will be made available to eligible students throughout the duration of their degree.

You do not need to apply for this funding. It will be awarded automatically to eligible students who have consented to share their household income information as part of their Student Finance authority (e.g. Student Finance England) means-tested application. Call 0300 100 0607 with your Customer Reference Number to check that you have given consent to share.
