From selfies to souvenirs: thinking sociologically about travel and tourism
It's summertime and traditionally the time that people go on holiday or travel to see friends and family. In this lecture, we will think sociologically about what travel and tourism mean, which identities they help to form. We will also discuss some of the issues around equality and social justice in relation to tourism to understand why we travel.
How would we like families to be in the future?
In this lecture, Professor Vicki Harman will explore how families enact and display care through food in various settings, including the home, schools and prisons. She will demonstrate how paying attention to mundane food practices can illuminate social inequalities, power relations and family members’ agency, creativity and resistance to devaluation.
This taster day will be held at our Whiteknights campus, and will run from approximately 10:00–15:00 (or 16:00 with an optional campus tour), allowing you time to really immerse yourself in the subject and relevant department.
Booking for the Sociology Taster Day opens on 26 May 2026.
