About the day

Languages from Scratch - Beginners Languages Taster Day

Tuesday 17 February 2026

10:30 to 16:00 with optional tour

Sign up for our Languages and Cultures taster day, Languages from Scratch, to discover what it would be like to study Languages as a part of your degree. Suitable for Year 12 students.

Boost your Opportunities by Adding a Language to your University Studies.

If you are set to study Business, Economics, English, History or Politics, consider including a language in your course. It’s a great way to diversify your skills and thus maximise your job opportunities, as well as opening the door to whole new worlds for you to explore.

The ability to communicate across cultures, to understand not just foreign words, but unfamiliar ideas, viewpoints, and approaches, is enriching, satisfying, creative, and sought-after by employers.

Britain has a language gap which costs the economy up to 3.5% of GDP each year. German, French and Spanish are the top in-demand European languages for employers across a wide range of sectors, from management, recruitment and sales to education, marketing and banking. Graduates who speak another language distinguish themselves, are attractive to employers and often earn more money.

If you wish you had kept going with a language in school, this is your chance to try out learning a language at university. Our Beginners Languages Taster Day offers the opportunity to try out languages from scratch in a fun, supportive small-group learning environment and to understand how a joint degree with Business, Economics, English, History or Politics works.
