About the day
Sign up for our taster day to discover what it would be like to study Criminology at degree level. You will have the opportunity to meet current staff and students, explore the campus, and learn about the benefits of studying at Reading.
This event is free to attend. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, and eligible students can also receive a travel bursary to attend the taster day.
As an attendee, you will participate in two hands-on sessions:
Session 1: Techniques of neutralisation
This lecture introduces the concept of techniques of neutralisation. This engaging session illustrates how we teach the theoretical explanations of criminal behaviour and the ways in which individuals justify or rationalise deviant acts.
Session 2: Crimes of the Powerful: When Knowledge Becomes a Victim
This taster session explores how powerful individuals, corporations, and institutions can cause harm not only through illegal or unethical actions, but also by shaping, hiding, or distorting knowledge. We will examine how evidence can be suppressed, public understanding manipulated, and certain voices excluded, asking who gets to define “truth” when power is involved.
