Discover student life

Your students' union

Reading University Students’ Union (RUSU) is a democratic, student-led organisation, here to guide and help you make the most of your student experience while studying at the University of Reading (UoR). It provides opportunities, facilities and entertainment.

As a student at UoR, you are automatically a member of RUSU – and entitled to have a say in directing the organisation.

Enhance your university experience

RUSU offers:

  • bars, cafes and social events
  • a specialist Student Advice Team to help you with anything from academic appeals to financial problems
  • lots of volunteering opportunities
  • a variety of full-time paid and part-time voluntary roles
  • a student media centre
  • environmental and ethical projects
  • a 94-place nursery for student parents
  • administration of over 150 clubs and societies.

As a registered charity, all the revenue from RUSU’s bars, cafe and retail outlets goes directly to fund student activities such as representation, campaigns, the RUSU Advice Service, sports clubs, societies and volunteer groups.

Representing you

Each February, students elect five, full-time officers to represent them and run RUSU for the following academic year. As members of the University's decision-making committees, student officers have the power to campaign and lobby the University on your behalf.

Becoming a student officer

Various elections take place during the autumn and spring terms. These are a variety of full-time paid and part-time voluntary roles that you can put yourself forward or vote for. This is your chance as a Reading student to get involved and decide the future leadership of RUSU.

Independent from the University

As RUSU is a separate organisation, when working with the University they are unbiased on issues affecting students. They campaign for the changes you – as their members – want to see.

RUSU’s ambition is to deliver what ttheir 17,000+ members want in an accountable, inclusive and dynamic way, with integrity at the core. For more information, visit the RUSU website.

Give it a Go

The Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) is home to a wide range of sports clubs, societies and volunteering projects, all of which are run voluntarily by students. There are currently over 150 groups, so there's bound to be something for you. All students are welcome to join any group they wish.

With over 100 societies in RUSU, we are confident that there is something for everyone. We play host to many different types of societies, fitting into the following activity groups: Academic & Career, Arts, Campaigns & Causes, Culture & Faith, Hobbies & Interests, and Politics.

Media streams

Our three media streams - The Spark Newspaper, Junction11 Radio, and RUTV – welcome students who want to create fresh content for the University community.

Sports and dance

We have 56 groups in this category, covering both competitive and non-competitive sports and dance. Whether you would like to take up a sport or style of dance for the first time, or you’re a seasoned professional, everyone is welcome.

Volunteering

From wildlife and conservation projects to volunteering with children and the elderly, RUSU offers a range of volunteering opportunities. Whether you can spare a few hours here and there, or are looking to volunteer on a regular basis, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

Junior Common Rooms

Junior Common Rooms (JCRs) are community-focused groups of people who organise social events such as fundraisers and sporting activities, and make your hall an inclusive community for all. These representatives are students who have previously lived in halls and have been elected by students.

Explore our range of sports and societies on the RUSU website.

More than just a nightclub

RUSU hosts a wide variety of events day and night to suit all tastes in several versatile venues.

The 3sixty venue is considered one of the best Student Union venues in the country, and is certainly the largest venue in Reading, with a capacity of over 2000.

This lively venue has hosted conferences, comedians, regular club nights and live bands such as Pendulum, Zane Lowe, Scott Mills, Wretch 32, Tinie Tempah, Chipmunk, Professor Green and Greg James, who have all performed on stage at 3sixty. The venue even hosted Children in Need where the BBC broadcast live to the country, supported by our University's cheerleaders.

The venue is also a space for clubs and societies to practice and rehearse in, and Upper 3sixty – the balcony and mezzanine area – is a popular area to eat lunch and study during the day.

Visit the RUSU website to find out more.

Free, confidential and independent advice

RUSU offers a free, confidential, non-judgemental, independent and non-discriminatory advice service to all students.

A specialist Student Advice Team run drop-in sessions in RUSU’s Advice and Representation Centre (ARC), tailored to the individual’s needs and specialising in the following areas:

  • Academic services
  • Housing advice
  • Money advice
  • Welfare advice

No information is shared with the University or anyone else without your permission.

For more information or to book a session, visit the RUSU website.

Eating and drinking

Within RUSU, you will find a selection of places to eat and drink. Our bars and cafes are great places to grab a cooked breakfast, some lunch, or a post-study pick-me-up.

Mondial cafe is the place to get your Starbucks fix, relax with friends, have some lunch or take advantage of free Wi-Fi. It also serves breakfast Monday-Friday.

Mojos is the largest bar on campus, and serves a wide selection of pub-style food and drinks. It's open six days a week and is a great place to catch up with friends. It's also the venue for comedy nights and Thursday's Quiz & Karaoke evening.

During the summer months, you can take advantage of Mojos' huge outside patio, and enjoy a cold drink while watching the ducks and geese on Whiteknights lake.

Visit the RUSU website for more information on catering venues and lounges.

Campaigning for change

RUSU campaigns on behalf of its members, and gives students the ability to campaign for change on a range of topics – with the aim to create a better experience during your time at university. These campaigns could focus on issues which are affecting students within the Union, the University, the wider community, or nationally.

Visit the RUSU website for more information on campaigns.
