Childs Hall provides bright, comfortable self-catered student accommodation on Whiteknights campus, close to academic buildings and next to Whiteknights lake. It is our designated Quieter Lifestyle Hall. 

Please note Childs Hall is undergoing planned building enhancement works during academic year 2025/26. This may extend into the academic year 2026/27. Should this be the case and your room booking is affected, compensation will be applied to rooms impacted at a rate of 5% or 10% where relevant.

Meal plans

The University recommends all first-year students select a Meal Plan with your Accommodation choice to support your transition to life at university and help you reach your full potential academically. 

We offer a choice of 3, 7, 14 or unlimited number of Meals per week across 5 large dining sites to all students regardless of where you live.

Students with specific requirements

Single-sex accommodation

Single-sex areas are available at Childs Hall. Single-sex university accommodation means sharing a flat (not a room) with other students of the same sex. Please be aware in either male or female single-sex accommodation, guests (including overnight guests) may be of a different sex. Visiting staff members (cleaners, maintenance staff etc.) may also be of a different sex.

Accessibility

There are some accessible rooms available at Childs Hall. We work closely with the University of Reading's Disability Advisory Service to support students who require adaptations or accessible rooms. Find out more on the accessible accommodation page. 

Quieter lifestyle

We aim to allocate students together who consider themselves to have a ‘quieter lifestyle’. Please note, we can’t guarantee a permanent quiet environment. Communal living will always involve some level of noise, including from outside the building. However by placing students requesting a quieter lifestyle together we hope to better meet the different expectations of our students.

Accommodation Guarantee

Prospective students are guaranteed a place in halls if they are:

  • A new full-time undergraduate who holds Reading as a Firm UCAS choice and applies for accommodation by 1 August** and satisfies any conditions of their academic offer by 3 September 2026.
  • A new full-time postgraduate who has accepted an offer from the University and applies for accommodation by 1 August** and satisfies any conditions of their academic offer by 3 September 2026.
