University of Reading appearing in news media including TV and radio

#PlanetPartners:working with global partners to protect the environment

  • Dr Stephen Burt (Meteorology) is quoted by The Telegraph (and in print), Reading Today (in print), and Yahoo! on possible hosepipe bans this summer due to dry weather in December and January.
  • BBC 1 South and Reading.co.uk report that the University is working with Reading Borough Council and other local partners to create an interactive education programme about air pollution which will be implemented in primary and secondary schools across Reading. Professor Hong Yang (Geography) is quoted on the project's aims and Marta O’Brien (air quality researcher) is also involved in the project. Read the RBC release.
  • Western Morning News (in print) and Western Daily Press (in print) report on the University's part in leading a European-wide project which aims to show farmers how they can boost food production and achieve net zero within a decade by adopting agroforestry.   • Professor Matthew Owens (Meteorology) is quoted by Voice Of Sikkim and Extreme Tech on why we are entering a period of increased solar activity.
  • Professor Chris Hilson (Law) is quoted by Food Service Footprint on Scotland’s new deposit return scheme for drinks containers. 
  • BBC Radio Berkshire reports on the University's weather recordings which declare last month was the dryest since 1934. 
  • Reading Today (in print) reports that restaurant foodservice supplier, Brakes, has launched the UK's first zero-emissions electric transport vehicle. It carries Professor Ed Hawkins' (Meteorology) climate stripes.
  • Stir It Up Magazine reports on a webinar for TUCO that University energy officer, Dr Samantha Mudie, gave on how to reduce energy consumption in school kitchens. 
  • The Irish Times and Independent.ie mention that researchers from the University were involved in a study on the consequences of rising ocean temperatures and increased rainfall.

Food and farming:

  • Professor Richard Bennett (Agriculture) was interviewed by BBC Radio 4 on issues that consumers may meet when interpreting new animal welfare labels.
  • Professor CarolWagstaff (Food) was quoted by Wokingham Paper (in print) and Reading Today (in print) explaining the current UK supermarket fruit and vegetable shortage. Read her expert comment.
  • Dr JakeBishop (Agriculture) is listed by Arable Farming (in print) for being involved in a study developing and trailing crop varieties to ensure food security in a changing climate.
  • Practical Farm Ideas (in print) mentions the University as a major contributor to agricultural research. 

Culture and heritage:

  • This Is Oxfordshire, Oxford Mail, and Yahoo!report on the University's research on the skeletal remains of an Anglo-Saxon man and woman, quoting PhD researcher Summer Courts on her research aims.
  • Dr Gabor Thomas (Archaeology) is quoted by The Past on recent findings that an Anglo-Saxon monastery was more resilient to Viking attacks than previously thought. Read our news story.

  • Reading Today (in print) mentions that members from the University Student's Union gave an address at a vigil that was held in honour of Brianna Ghey, a trans girl who was killed.
  • Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Vande Noort’s monthly column for Wokingham Today focuses on the University's celebration of allyship and inclusion.
