Physician Associate Studies
Train as a physician associate at the University of Reading and prepare for a rewarding career in the health sector.
Physician associates work under the supervision of doctors in hospitals and GP practices, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
We work closely with our local NHS primary care providers and local NHS Hospital Trusts to deliver our programmes.
You will be taught by practising healthcare professionals alongside academics, offering you an insight into current practice. Your training will involve:
- intensive evidence-based academic work
- hands-on workplace experience
- interaction with patients from early on in your studies.
Our programmes meet the requirements set out by the General Medical Council (GMC), providing you with skills that are transferable across the NHS.
Leng Review into the physician associate profession
You may be aware of the recent Leng Review and ongoing discussions around the Physician Associate role, and we would like to reassure you that we, alongside our partners at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, remain fully committed to this programme.
Our Physician Associate course is designed to develop highly flexible and transferable employability skills, clinical skills and knowledge alongside experience of patient care. Upon completion, you will be qualified for a range of healthcare careers and further study options within and beyond the Physician Associate role.
We are awaiting guidance from the General Medical Council, our accrediting body, and the UK government on which recommendations from the review they wish to take forward, and on any changes to our course that may be needed as a result. We will keep current and prospective students updated.
