Our BSc Building Surveying with International Foundation Year course is designed to prepare you for a successful career in building surveying. You will benefit from the Department's strong links with industry and the surveying profession.

This programme is designed for international students. If you want to study building surveying at a British university but don’t have the correct qualifications, our four-year BSc Building Surveying with International Foundation Year programme enables you to undertake an undergraduate building surveying degree.

You will complete a foundation year (called Year 0) before progressing onto our three-year BSc Building Surveying degree. This means you can apply for a single four-year visa that covers the duration of your studies.

The foundation year is designed to equip you with the subject-specific and general study skills needed to cope with the demands of undergraduate study. Our high-quality teaching is geared towards the needs of students from a wide range of educational backgrounds. 93% of our students said teaching staff are good at explaining things (National Student Survey 2026, 93% of responders from the School of Construction Management and Engineering).

This module introduces the fundamental concepts of Construction Science through an examination of the physical properties and mechanics of construction materials and the physics of heat, fluids, light sound and electricity. The application of these concepts is described in the CE1CCT Construction Technology Module delivered in the Autumn Term and the concepts are reinforced through the experimental elements of the CE1CES Empirical Science Module which is delivered in the Spring Term. This integrated approach enables the theories and concepts learnt in CE1CCS to be used in other modules, thus helping to reinforce knowledge and understanding and develop critical analysis.

Summary:

The Built Environment discipline relies on the successful performance of projects underpinned by effective team performance and the upholding of professional standards of conduct. This module introduces students to two important areas of the School’s curriculum – academic research and professional practice. Using an enquiry-based learning approach students will work in teams to address problems. These problems will be structured to give students an opportunity to better understand construction and surveying professional practice and ethics. Students will be challenged to think their way creatively through problems whilst learning about team dynamics, leadership, and team formation. Students will also be given the opportunity to work in teams to undertake a structured research project focused on sustainability topics. They will be asked to begin to develop their understanding of research and given an opportunity to learn and apply some basic research skills.

Designers are placing ever increasing demands upon the Engineering community, with larger, taller and more complex built structures. These now include mega towers stretching almost 1 km into the sky. Understanding the key principles behind engineering is vital for any construction professional today if they are to manage and cost such projects. From previous years of running surveying, it is clear that student fail to understand how design and construction drawing become real buildings or structures and the fundamentals for achieving this.

Construction work is typically carried out through contracting with a variety of different firms, connected through a complex network of contracts. Construction Procurement

Summary:

Construction procurement is complex for four reasons. The purchase of construction occupies a considerable effort in pre-planning; it takes place over a protracted period; single projects typically constitutes a large proportion of suppliers’ and buyers’ annual turnover; construction involves fragmented, specialized supply chains involving a large number of separate companies. Procurement of construction is a multi-disciplinary study encompasses organization, economics of market and firms, law and business economics. Issues of particular importance are high numbers of specialist trade contractors, the separation of design from construction, complex interactions between off-site and on-site fabrication and the role of professionals in the process. This is the context within which we need to understand the commercial processes of structuring, negotiating, recording and enforcing business deals in construction.

Understanding the process of doing research is essential preparation for the final year dissertation. This module will give students the grounding in research methods, data collection and analysis, and the process of writing a dissertation. It is delivered by active research staff with a mix of lectures, group work and hands-on activities. During the module students will gain key research skills, develop ideas for a research project, prepare a dissertation proposal, and find out about the range of research activities going on within the School of the Built Environment.

Statutory law plays an important role in many aspects of construction. Knowledge of statutory law, and an understanding of its application, is vital for the success of construction projects and firms operating in the construction sector. Statutory law impacts on a wide range of areas relating to the construction industry, including health and safety, equality and diversity, building planning and control, procurement and the environment. This module builds upon LW1A05 General Introduction to Law module at Part 1 to help students develop an appreciation for the application of law within construction projects, construction firms and by construction professions.

Dissertation

Summary:

To conduct all parts of a research project and to deliver a dissertation that includes aims and objectives, argument, literature review, data collection, data analysis, conclusions and recommendations. The dissertation provides students with an opportunity to conduct an intensive investigation into one research topic and to present their findings in a formal manner in accordance with academic conventions and the requirements of the subject. In addition, this module enables students to develop advanced skills in written communication through the production of a written dissertation.

Title:

Construction Contract Management

Summary:

Construction contracts define a complex range of roles and responsibilities. The complex network of contracts in a construction project create multiple, interdependent roles that can only be understood in the context of the legal jurisdiction within which they are intended to operate. Construction contract law deals with the contractual mechanisms for governing the relationships between the major parties in terms of allocation of responsibilities, allocation of risk, definition of obligations and documentary requirements. The emergence of disputes calls for a range of dispute resolution methods and techniques for terminating contract prematurely. Because of the sheer scale of investment that is represented by construction processes, contractual issues require accurate interpretation and careful handling. By looking at terms in a range of standard-form contracts, we will study how these issues are dealt with in the construction sector.

This module draws upon ALL the other modules in the programme. In particular it should develop the understanding of professional and technical practice gained by students in CE2CPP,CE2CMB consolidate your employability activities and provide a useful launch-pad for the other modules in your Part 3 Specialism. This is reinforced by engagement in module CE3CBM.

Digital Technology Use in Construction

Summary:

Digital technologies rapidly change the way we build, manage, and interact with facilities and the built environment. Life cycle information modelling of built facilities offers exciting new opportunities for their integrated delivery and management. However, technological advances also bring numerous challenges and social resistance to change. This module will explore how digital technologies and collaborative information modelling initiatives such as those promoted by the UK BIM agenda, shape construction; what difficulties companies are facing; and in this process expose students to some common technology- and process-related implementation challenges they will face in the industry.

Title:

Health and Safety Management and Culture in Construction

Summary:

Construction projects involve multiple contractors, trades and personnel from diverse backgrounds, who need to temporarily work together in a complex and constantly changing environment. These high levels of organizational, technological and cultural differentiation create substantial challenges for the management of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). In the labour-intensive sector of construction, with a heavy reliance on subcontracting, research indicates that those at the bottom of the contractual chain bear the most significant consequences when things go wrong. This module provides a critical examination of the contemporary OHS landscape, exploring the causes of OHS hazards, introducing risk management and some of the challenges of integrating OHS into construction project management. It encourages students to develop a holistic approach to the management of OHS risks.

This module aims to provide the knowledge and skills to understand the different approaches to managing construction projects. Using the systems approach as a touchstone, the module covers the key ingredients of project management such as the principle roles, briefing, managing the client and the team, understanding the structural choices and the contextual setting, whilst emphasising the softer skills required. The module therefore provides an over-arching understanding of the processes of project management and the competencies of a project manager.

Summary:

This module is designed for students who already have some knowledge of construction technology and the introductory measurement and quantification skills of building work for procurement and cost management purposes. This module develops these introductory quantification skills to a more advanced level, sufficient to demonstrate expertise in a quantity surveying role. The module further explores the costing aspect of building elements which gives rise to commercial management practices. On completion of the module, the student should be sufficiently skilled and knowledgeable to fulfil a productive junior QS role in preparation for more intricate practice.

Summary:

This module equips students with leading-edge knowledge and practices on the innovation strategies being deployed by construction companies to respond to the critically important low-carbon agenda. The module demonstrates how environmental policies, company strategies and new sustainable technologies are all closely interconnected and how construction companies are strategically managing the profound innovation challenges these complex interactions create. Throughout the module detailed cases studies are used to bring to life key issues. The cases are drawn from research projects being undertaken by members of the module delivery team in the low-carbon area in collaboration with leading construction companies.

Historic Built Environment

Summary:

An introduction to the built heritage of England; to building conservation principles; to legislation, procedures, policy and guidance relating to heritage assets; and to the management of change affecting the historic built environment. The module entails a significant amount of reading, project work and visits to buildings and areas of interest. Such visits may be accompanied or may be undertaken independently as directed by the module convenor.

Please be aware that students from the Department of Real Estate and Planning are required to either have already taken CE2CBP or to take this module alongside CE3HBE.

Human Resource Management in Construction

Summary:

Effective human resource management (HRM) contributes significantly to overall organizational performance. It is no different in the construction industry People are a key source of a firm’s competitive advantage and so, the processes, practices, and implications of HRM must be considered seriously. However, due to a range of practical pressures and factors that are either associated with or embedded within the industry, the vital role of HRM in construction is often overlooked.  The module will cover the essential elements of HRM and their implementation in the UK construction industry. It draws substantially on HRM concepts, theories and practices from different industries to facilitate understanding of the issues and concerns that are applicable to both construction and non-construction firms. It will explain and clarify how an informed, well-structured and participative approach to HRM can deliver substantial benefits to all stakeholders: employers and employees as well as their shareholders and clients.

Fees

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: not applicable.

New international students: £23,850 for 2027/28 Foundation year, then rising to the standard course fees for the duration of your bachelor's level study. The International tuition fee is subject to annual increases in subsequent years of study as set out in your student contract. For 2027/28, the standard tuition fee is £26,850 per year. Become a Global Sustainability Leaders Scholar

This exciting new undergraduate scholarship scheme is focused on creating a community of global sustainability leaders of the future. We are offering up to 400 scholarships per year, for high-achieving students from the UK and overseas.

Each scholar will receive £6,000 a year for maintenance and living costs, for up to four years of full-time study on their course (subject to terms and conditions).

Careers

After graduation you will be well-placed to move into either consultancy or contracting. Past graduates have progressed to a variety of roles within the construction and surveying sector, including:

  • quantity surveying or cost management positions, both contractor and client-side
  • building surveyors
  • project managers
  • BIM managers.

Alternatively, you can choose to move on to postgraduate study.

Our international reputation, and close relationships with industry and professional institutions, make our graduates highly sought after in the workplace.

Overall, 94% of graduates from Construction Management and Engineering at Reading are in work or further study within 15 months of graduation; of those in full-time employment, 100% are in graduate-level roles (based on our analysis of HESA data © HESA 2026, Graduate Outcomes Survey 2023/24; includes first degree Construction Management and Engineering responders).

Our graduates often return to their placement host company. Others gain career opportunities at career fairs offered by the School. These fairs – which are specific to sectors relevant to our students – are held every year, enabling you to connect with employers in the industry.
