University of Reading appearing in news media including TV and radio

MenB vaccines: Dr Simon Clarke (Biomedical Sciences) spoke to BBC Radio Berkshire and was quoted by Express (republished by Pagegoo and BritBrief) about recommendation for teenagers to receive meningitis vaccines. From our expert comment: MenB vaccine rollout a ‘vital’ step that will ‘save lives’ 

Food and farming:

  • AOL, Newswav, Inkl, MSN, Western Morning News, and others republished an article from The Independent quoting Professor Gunter Kuhnle (Food and Nutritional Sciences) on a study about the affordability of ultra-processed food.  
  • Further coverage of Food Science students Benjamin Leroy, Kam Bautista, Xintong Qiao and Charlie Reavell, who won the Ecotrophelia 2026 competition from Bioindustry Association. From our story: Leftover hazelnut pulp becomes prize winning chocolate treat 
  • G4Food mentioned research into reducing saturated fats in pastries.

  • Further comments from Professor Ed Hawkins (Meteorology) about heatwave media coverage was highlighted by The Canary. 
  • Kilkenny Observer quoted Professor Hawkins on increasing global temperatures. 
  • Dr Claire Ryder (Meteorology) was quoted by Daily Mail (republished by MSN) about how Saharan dust has affected the UK’s air quality. 
  • BritBrief, Irish Mirror, Wales Online, RSVP, The Mirror (republished by MSN, Head Topics, and Yahoo News), and various outlets provided further comments from Regius Professor Hannah Cloke (Meteorology) on high temperatures in Spain and Portugal. 
  • A study by Professor Paul Williams (Meteorology) linking climate change and air turbulence was featured by Bored Panda (republished by AOL, Inkl, and TV Overmind). 
  • A study by PhD student Ankit Bhandekar (Meteorology) found that India’s monsoon season is affected by where air pollution is cleaned up, reports One18.

  • NCAS (republished by Europe Says) mentioned Reading research on measuring greenhouse gas emissions. 
  • BBC Radio Berkshire highlighted recent record-breaking temperatures measured on campus.

  • PBC Today mentioned a study by Dr Aba Fuertes (Built Environment) into the effect heatwaves have on construction workers. From our story: Construction sites are not ready for extreme heat

  • BBC Radio 4 replayed an interview with Dr Ollie Douglas, Curator at the Museum of English Rural Life, about the history of countryside protection.
