Continued Professional Development (CPD) Certificate Supervision for High Intensity Therapists and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners

  • Year of entry
    2027/28
  • Course duration
    Part Time: 4 months
  • Year of entry
    2027/28
  • Course duration
    Part Time: 4 months

Develop your supervisory skills and learn about evidence-based supervisory approaches for high intensity (HI) therapists and psychological wellbeing practitioners (PWPs).

As stated in the Talking Therapies Manual, effective supervision is fundamental to the success of the NHS Talking Therapies programme. High quality supervision requires supervisors with the set of competences described in the NHS competence frameworks.

On this course, you'll benefit from two taught days which are tailored to your profession, and three days where HIs and PWPs can learn from each other’s experiences. The course offers a great opportunity to meet like-minded colleagues.

Choose the University of Reading

  • Your training will be delivered within the Charlie Waller Institute. Established in 2008, the Institute offers award-winning training underpinned by psychological research.
  • You'll be taught by enthusiastic lecturers with knowledge and experience of supervision.
  • Our PWP and CBT supervisors will ensure that the course is tailored to your needs.

Who is the programme for?

This course is for qualified cognitive behavioural therapists and psychological wellbeing practitioners who wish to start supervising other clinicians.

We offer this course to our NHS partners, as well as private clinicians who can choose a self-funding option.

If you are self-funding, it is recommended that you start your supervising during the course.

What you'll learn

This five day course will introduce you to:

  • key models of effective supervision
  • methods which can be used in supervision
  • an awareness of dynamics which can develop in the supervision space
  • ethical practise and consideration of protected characteristics in supervision
  • an introduction to the supervision of supervision.

How you will learn

  • Teaching will be online, between 09:00 and 16:00.
  • You will receive supporting material via email prior to each teaching day.
  • To make the most of your learning from this course, we recommend that your start supervising other clinicians before the fifth teaching day. This will support timely application of the skills you have learnt, and allow you to develop theory to practise links.

Course duration

Five full days, taking place across four months to allow theory to practise links to be developed.

Requirements to pass the course

To receive the full CPD certificate, you must be able to commit to a minimum of four training days (though we recommend attendance of all training days).

If you miss a training day unexpectedly and fall below the minimum four days, you will be able to “top up” with the next cohort.

If you're planning on supervising both HIs and PWPs, you should attend the full HI induction and the afternoon only of the PWP induction. You should attend both of the final “supervision of supervision” days in full.
