Reading children invited to join free University choir

Families across Reading are being invited to sign their children up for Universal Voices, a free community choir that gives children the chance to sing, learn and perform together this autumn.

Run by the University of Reading’s Institute of Education, Universal Voices welcomes children in school years 3 to 6 (aged 7 to 11) from across the Reading area. Rehearsals take place every Wednesday during term time, from 4:00pm to 5:30pm on the University's London Road campus. The first rehearsal this term will take place on 23 September.

The choir combines musicianship training with performance opportunities, giving children a creative and fun way to develop their singing while learning to read and understand music. The choir prides itself on being open and inclusive to all children, regardless of previous musical experience.

Members perform regularly at events in Reading and beyond, with opportunities to take part in performances at the University’s Great Hall and Reading Minster in the run up to Christmas. A range of different music styles are sung. 

Dr Rebecca Berkley, Director of Universal Voices at the University of Reading, said: "Singing in a choir gives children so much more than just musical skill. It builds their confidence, teaches them to listen and work as part of a team, and gives them a real sense of achievement when they perform. It is also a great way for children to make friends and connect with one another.

“Universal Voices is a welcoming space where every child can find their voice, whatever their starting point, and we would love to invite more children from across Reading to join us this autumn and beyond. Children really enjoy being part of this choir and many stay with us for a number of years.”

Universal Voices also plays a valuable role in training the next generation of music teachers. Students studying on the Institute of Education's teacher training courses work directly with the children each week, developing their own professional music teaching skills under the guidance of choir staff.

The Institute of Education has worked with nearly 2000 children and 60 teachers through this outreach programme. The choir is free for local families thanks to funding provided by generous donations from University alumni and local supporters.
