European heatwave: expert comment

 

"A heat dome moving in from the Atlantic is set to trigger another significant heatwave across western Europe, with parts of Portugal, Spain, and France likely to see temperatures soaring to 40°C or even higher over the weekend and into early next week. In parts of France and Spain, the wildfire risk is increasing, and this extreme heat poses a serious health threat, especially to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, people with underlying health conditions, and the homeless. 

 

"Heatwaves don’t roar like storms — they creep in quietly, but can be just as deadly. Heat-related deaths are preventable, but many underestimate the danger — especially during holiday season when attention tends to shift away from weather hazards. To stay safe, avoid going outdoors during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated by drinking water regularly (not just when you’re thirsty), wear light and loose clothing, and seek shade. Be alert for symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, a rapid heartbeat, or headaches — these could be signs of heatstroke, which is life-threatening. Cool down quickly and seek medical help if needed. 

 

"The UK may dodge the worst of Europe’s heat, but temperatures near the mid-30s temperatures are still on the way for parts of central, southern, and eastern England by Tuesday. It will be the fourth heatwave of this summer. A yellow heat-health alert is in place between Monday and Wednesday, which means watch your step in the heat and stay hydrated."
