Prestigious accreditation for Geography programmes
29 August 2024
The University of Reading's Department of Geography and Environmental Science is celebrating a significant achievement as nine of its undergraduate programmes have been accredited by the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG). This accreditation recognises the high quality of teaching and learning in geography at the University.
The accredited programmes are:
- BSc Geography (Human)
- BSc Geography (Physical)
- BSc Geography (Human & Physical)
Each of these programmes is also available with Professional Experience or Study Year Abroad options, all of which have received accreditation.
This recognition from the RGS-IBG demonstrates that these programmes meet the high standards set out in the 2022 QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Geography. The accreditation process evaluates the knowledge, understanding, skills, and approaches that students gain through their degree programmes.
Professor Rob Francis, Chair of the Accreditation Review Panel, commended the accredited institutions, stating, "It is fantastic that another group of geography programmes have been accredited by the Society. One of the great things about reviewing applications is learning about the great initiatives taking place in geography departments across the country."
Dr Stuart Black, Head of the University of Reading School of Archaeology, Geography and Environmental Science said “It is fantastic news that our excellent programmes have been recognised by the RGS-IBG through this accreditation and shows the hard work and professionalism of all the staff in the department”.
The University of Reading joins ten other UK higher education institutions in this round of accreditations, reinforcing its position as a leading provider of geography education.
