Emeritus Professor Tony Giles - obituary
21 November 2023
We are sad to report the passing of Emeritus Professor Tony Giles OBE, a former colleague who made exceptional contributions during his time at the University.
Tony was the Founding Director of the Farm Management Unit from 1979-1993, a provincial Agriculture Economist from 1979-1993, and the Head of Department of Agricultural Economics and Management from 1983-1984.
We were informed that he passed away on 31 October 2023.
Tony joined the University in 1960 as a Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Management before progressing to Head of Department.
During his time at the University, he was appointed as the first Chairman of the University Industrial Liaison Committee (1986-1991) and the Second Chairman of School Applied Management Studies (1987-1991).
He was also the Founder of the Staff Cricket Club in the mid-1960s.
Tony was highly accomplished outside of the University as well. He was the National Chairman of the Centre of Management in Agriculture (1987-89) and the UK Representative of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (1971-88).
In recognition of his services to farm management, he was awarded an OBE in 1992.
Although Tony retired in 1993, his impact on the academic and agricultural world will always be remembered by his colleagues.
