Biography
As a microbiologist, Simon Clarke's scientific work focuses on the biology and pathogenicity of Staphylococcus aureus, otherwise known as MRSA. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he became a prominent public figure, appearing frequently across television, radio, and national news outlets to communicate complex infection science, address public misconceptions, and offer expert analysis.
Alongside his academic pursuits, he has maintained a strong commitment to public service in local government. Formerly a Public Governor for the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and an Oxfordshire County Councillor, Simon actively contributed to governance through roles on the Oxfordshire Health Overview Scrutiny Committee and the Audit and Governance Committee. Demonstrating his dedication to military veterans, he also served as the Armed Forces Champion for Oxfordshire, a duty informed by his own service in the Royal Navy, which resulted in the council being awarded an Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award.
