COVID-19 update

Find out about how we'll be delivering our courses in 2020.

Our BA Primary Education (QTS) programme is specifically designed to enable students to develop a strong identity as a primary teacher.

Please note that this course is now closed to 2020 entry applicants.

This course offers the option to study a range of modules within the disciplines of art, English, mathematics and music. Additionally, you will have the option to undertake modules from contemporary issues in education, thus providing you with a broad and deep understanding of education in the twenty-first century.

Throughout your three years with us, you will complete two optional modules alongside four compulsory modules per academic year. All your modules are carefully aligned to develop and nurture your enthusiasms and ambitions. You will leave the course with a strong identity as a beginner teacher with the scope to further develop into an educator of the future.

You will divide your time between studying modules on professional skills such as the core National Curriculum subjects, including Information and Communications Technology (ICT). You will develop skills essential to the role of a teacher, including leadership, classroom management, and evaluation and assessment. You can then put these skills into practice through professional placements, which take place throughout the course. Additionally you will study professional legal requirements, and investigate the role of the teacher and how children develop.

This course will enable you to get a job as a primary school teacher following graduation. There is a high demand for primary school teachers and many of our graduates are offered jobs before they have finished the course. Furthermore, we are ranked 7th in the UK for Education (The Guardian University Guide 2021).

For more information, please visit the Institute of Education website.

Structure

  • Year 1
  • Year 2
  • Year 3

The course begins by introducing you to the ideas of developing a deep insight into the teaching and learning within your optional modules within the primary classroom and wider issues linked to education. In your professional lectures, you will start to understand the nature of teaching in primary schools and start to unpick the requirements of the primary curriculum. You will have a block placement in a Key Stage 1 classroom and a serial placement either in Early Years or Key Stage 1. Your work will be assessed through course work, presentations and in some cases, practical studio work.

Core modules include:

  • English and communication in the primary curriculum 1
  • Mathematics in the primary school
  • Teaching practical sessions in science and physical education
  • Professional studies 1
  • School experience 1

Please note that all modules are subject to change.

You will build on your Year 1 experiences and develop greater depth of understanding in how children develop their learning through your chosen optional modules. In the professional lectures, you will unpack the teaching and learning of all areas of the primary curriculum and the progression of ideas. You will especially develop an insight into the teaching and learning strategies within Key Stage 2. Your placement will be in a Key Stage 2 classroom. Your work will be assessed through course work, presentations and in some cases, practical studio work.

Core modules include:

  • English and communication in the primary curriculum 2
  • Enabling progress in mathematics and science
  • The foundation subjects in the primary curriculum
  • Professional studies 2
  • School experience 2

Please note that all modules are subject to change.

Your final year on the programme gives you the opportunity to understand and develop clear strategies and skills to go into leadership roles within a chosen subject through the optional modules. Additionally, you will be provided the opportunity and time to develop your final year dissertation in an area of research that you are interested in. Your professional lectures will focus on issues of inclusion within primary education and what tool kit you will need in order to be a successful educator of the future.

Core modules include:

  • Refining pedagogy in English and mathematics
  • Formative assessment in science and physical education
  • Professional studies and inclusion
  • School experience 3

Please note that all modules are subject to change.

During my time at Reading, I grew very close to the lecturers and my fellow students. We had such a strong family bond, supporting each other through difficult times. The lectures, assignments and seminars are tough and rigorous but with that support structure, I was able to achieve more than I ever thought I could.
