With this BA Art and Psychology develop your practical skills and explore new and emerging art forms. Be stimulated by our internationally excellent staff, take part in wide variety of exhibitions and gain your first qualification towards training as a professional psychologist.

Explore how art and psychology feed into one another and discuss the therapeutic properties of creating art on this well-established course.

Join a lively community and explore a vast range of media, experiment with emerging art forms, and develop as an artist. Modules in Contemporary Art Theory and the History of Art will complement your practical study. You will receive a dedicated studio space, accessible 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, and a studio tutor to help develop your individual and professional practice. The studios are a busy place with events, screenings, performances and exhibitions happening regularly.

Trips to museums and art galleries help prompt thoughts on how art is displayed and received. You will gain professional experience by taking part in your own exhibitions, public art commissions and events. Our teaching staff are all artists, curators and researchers of international standing and strongly encourage regular exhibitions and open debate.

The psychology element of this course is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and enables you to move on to further training as a professional psychologist. Your first year will introduce you to the concepts required for BPS qualification, including cognition, neuroscience, development, personality and social psychology.

Throughout the course you will gain practical experience, and learn how to devise and run your own experiments. You will develop your knowledge by exploring areas of interest in greater depth. Modules are regularly revised and recent additions include autistic spectrum conditions, behavioural economics, nutritional psychology, and cognitive behavioural theory and therapy.

In your final year you will concentrate on your psychology dissertation and art degree show.

Both departments actively encourage placements and there is also the chance to experience life in another country. Throughout your degree you will receive advice and guidance in career development.

Placement

All students are encouraged to undertake several placement opportunities in both art and psychology. Past students have enjoyed art internships at Studio Voltaire and the Frieze Art Fair. Others have performed at the ICA, taken part in an Arts Council-supported film project at the Museum of Rural Life and participated in an international exhibition at the Seoul Institute of Arts in South Korea.

Psychology students have undertaken placements at outside organisations such as charities, at one of our three in-house NHS clinics, and at the world-renowned Charlie Waller Institute for Evidence-Based Psychological Treatments. Alternatively, you can volunteer as a research assistant on a range of projects within the School.

There are also several opportunities – across all our undergraduate courses - for you to study abroad at an international university. Institutions include the Emily Carr University of Art & Design in Vancouver, Canada; Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA; Monash University, Australia; and National Taiwan University of the Arts in Tapei, Taiwan; as well as Art Universities in Dijon, France; Zurich, Switzerland; Budapest, Hungary; and Tampere, Finland.

An introduction to the field of clinical psychology, with an emphasis on current topics of debate. Learning about Learning

Summary:

This module provides an introduction to human and animal learning.  The module will cover developmental, biological, and cognitive processes which support learning and memory, enabling students to reflect on the processes we use to plan, monitor, and evaluate our understanding and performance. It will cover early, influential studies and theories on human and animal learning (for example, studies conducted by Bandura on social learning, Pavlov on animal learning) as well as current research. The relevance of animal learning studies to human learning and cognition will also be discussed in classes on comparative cognition. This module is delivered at the University of Reading and the University of Reading Malaysia.

Modern psychological science is an inter-disciplinary endeavour. This module is designed to introduce students to the multiple perspectives that contribute to our understanding of human thought and behaviour. It introduces the key principles of organisation of systems from neurons and brain networks, to the individual, and to societal groups. For example, the module covers topics such as neural and hormonal function, genetic contributions to behaviour, personality, group dynamics. Part 2I Studio

Summary:

This is an Art studio module that is supported by tutorials, group critiques, material sessions, weekly seminars, exhibitions, and a program of visiting artist talks. There is also an option to take a study abroad module or take up a work placement in the Autumn term. The aim of the module is to support and challenge students in their development of an independent, creative and critically informed art practice. The module encourages students to identify and investigate particular (individual) interests and concerns through practical engagement in the studio and workshop areas. Students are further supported in the development of research skills relevant to both the development of an art practice and an understanding of its relationship to the broad field of contemporary art. Through the visiting artist program and placement schemes, students are encouraged to enhance their knowledge of career opportunities and reflect upon skills required to make effective applications.

Title:

Part 2 Studio including Career Management Skills

Summary:

This is a studio-based module where students are supported and guided in the development of an individual art practice. Studio tutors are available from Monday to Friday and they encourage students to be experimental, creative and

to become knowledgeable about contemporary art and culture. Material sessions where students can learn new skill in a range of media from painting to digital are available in the Autumn and Spring term. Weekly lectures by visiting artist give insight into diversity in the art world and the different ways artists make and practice today. Through staging exhibitions students learn about group working and this is further advanced through a program of group tutorials. During the module students learn appropriate methods of documenting and writing about their work. Through making, documenting and writing students learn what materials and ideas matter to them and how their concerns are informed by and relate to relevant contemporary art practices. The university careers team and alumni visit the department in the Autumn and Spring term to give practical and creative advice on the range of careers open to arts graduates.

Cognitive and Biological Psychology

This module explores core contemporary topics in biopsychology and cognition, including perception and neuroscience. Each topic will be covered from a biological, to cognitive, to behavioural perspective. This module also acknowledges the historical developments in these perspectives. Topics may include, attention and consciousness, object and face recognition, multisensory integration, pain, cognitive control, emotion and motivation, judgement and decision-making, problem solving and creativity, memory and skills. As part of this module, students will conduct and write-up a research project designed to link with one of the topics covered. Development across the lifespan

This module focuses on the biological, cognitive and social aspects of human development across the lifespan from infancy to old age. Students will be introduced to topics covering both typical development, as well as neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and ADHD, and disorders of ageing such as dementia. Students will be introduced to a range of historical and contemporary theories, along with relevant research, and learn how to critically evaluate these. This module explores core topics within social psychology and individual differences, with a focus on the interplay between the two disciplines. Specifically, students will examine various aspects of social cognition, perception and behaviour, with considerations as to how these can vary as a function of individual differences (for example, culture, gender, and personality). While the module covers contemporary topics within social psychology and individual differences, it simultaneously acknowledges the historical developments in both disciplines. This is a seminar based module designed to develop writing skills and the awareness of the scope of writing within art and art history. It will focus on the range of writing that constitutes the current discourses in art. The module will look at writings from Art Historical and critical theory approaches to genre in order to expand the student's expectations of what approaches are acceptable and useful within writing about art and art writing. Each week the group will look at different models of art writing in order to think through and begin to find a position on the appropriate forms for different contexts.

Independent study with Work Placement

Summary:

Students undertake an intensive investigation into an organisation, museum, gallery, studio complex, selected in consultation with a supervisor. Students will develop and present a portfolio consisting of elements such as an annotated list of sources; a critical bibliography including an analysis of a selected number of key sources; an exhibition and reproduction history, including illustrations; a visual analysis; a short discursive text accounting for the significance of their chosen investigation.  It may also be an exhibition or key texts in the field.

Summary:

This is an Art studio module that is supported by tutorials, group critiques, material sessions, weekly seminars, exhibitions, and a program of visiting artist talks.  The aim of the module is to support and challenge students in their development of an independent, creative and critically informed art practice. The module encourages students to consolidate and develop particular (individual) interests and concerns through practical engagement in the studio and workshop areas, to prepare them for future public exhibitions and to state their positions as artists. Students are further supported in the development of research skills relevant to both the development of an art practice and an understanding of its relationship to the broad field of contemporary art and to locate their practice both historically and theoretically. Through the visiting artist program students are encouraged to enhance their knowledge of career opportunities to enable them to plan and make effective applications for future postgraduate opportunities, employment, professional practice.

This module provides students with the opportunity to learn about the application of mathematical and computational models to the study of cognition and behaviour. It also introduces aspects of advanced data analysis and covers some practical matters relevant to modelling, in particular parameter fitting and model comparison. The general role of modelling in psychological research will be discussed and different types of models will be distinguished. A number of computational models that have been used in psychology will be introduced, and various issues in the implementation and interpretation of their results will be considered.

This module examines development of and changes in eating behaviours across the lifespan from infancy through to older adulthood. This includes the development of typical eating behaviours and food preferences in childhood and adolescence, as well as specific eating-related topics including obesity, disordered eating and dieting. It will draw on health psychology and clinical psychology research methods and will also consider relevant interventions that are designed to support individuals with their eating.

This module examines some of the main theories, models and practices associated with the development, assessment, treatment and management of offending behaviour, with an emphasis on sexual offending. Typical and Atypical Reading

Summary:

This module focusses on reading and dyslexia from theory to practise. We will look at how definitions of dyslexia can affect diagnosis decisions, which can lead to different treatment approaches. Teaching is highly interactive, using a Team-Based Learning approach, where students work together to explore content in depth. The poster assessment requires students to design a battery of tests to identify potential reading difficulties, with an accompanying summary to explain your rationale. Students receive formative feedback from peers in the poster conference.

Fees

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £9,250

New international students: £24,500

UK/Republic of Ireland fee changes

UK/Republic of Ireland undergraduate tuition fees are regulated by the UK government. These fees are subject to parliamentary approval and any decision on raising the tuition fees cap for new UK students would require the formal approval of both Houses of Parliament before it becomes law.

EU student fees

With effect from 1 August 2021, new EU students will pay international tuition fees. For exceptions, please read the UK government’s guidance for EU students.

Financial support for your studies

You may be eligible for a scholarship or bursary to help pay for your study. Students from the UK may also be eligible for a student loan to help cover these costs. See our fees and funding information for more information on what's available.

Placement year fees

If you spend a full year on placement, you will only pay 15% of your usual tuition fee for that year. For more information, please see our fees and funding pages or contact placements@reading.ac.uk.

Careers

As well as the practical experience gained on this degree, our students graduate with a range of transferable skills, such as self-motivation, time management and strategic thinking, and the ability to think and analyse scientifically.

As a graduate of this course you will be qualified for further training as a professional psychologist. Our BSc Psychology is accredited by the British Psychological Society and provides you with the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership. You could go on to work for organisations such as the NHS, civil services, schools or charities.

97% of leavers are in work and/or study 15 months after the end of their course (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2018/19; First Degree responders from Art). Many of our graduates develop successful careers as artists, writers and curators. These include a number of famous alumni, such as Turner Prize-nominated artists, and PhD students who are award-winning artists and curators at influential museums.

Others have found employment in galleries, education, art therapy, and film and video production. Recent employers include Tate, Whitechapel Gallery, Christies, Microsoft, the BBC, Victoria & Albert Museum, and Manolo Blahnik.

Alternatively you can choose to further develop your skills by moving into research, teacher training or postgraduate studies.
