Whiteknights Trees

The estate that became Whiteknights campus was originally managed as parkland. Under the ownership of the Marquis of Blandford from 1798 to 1819, it was landscaped with elaborate gardens and rare plant species.

The estate was later sold and divided into six separate properties before being acquired by the University of Reading in 1947.

The story of the previous generations has shaped the landscape of Whiteknights campus.

The community can now enjoy the trees on campus with the help of a Whiteknights Trees online arboretum.

The online resource:

• itemises and identifies trees across the estate
• offers trails to view different species and enjoy the local landscape.

There are more than 320 species identified on the website, which was launched as part of the University of Reading centenary celebrations in 2026.

Professor Gregory worked with the Friends of the University of Reading and the University’s Grounds staff to develop the Whiteknights Trees online arboretum. Features include suggested walking routes across the central campus and the Harris Garden. Professor Gregory hopes to develop more walking routes in the future.

The online arboretum showcases the rich biodiversity of Whiteknights campus, which the University maintains as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.

Students, staff, visitors and the local community can use this online resource to explore the campus and connect with nature.
