Training and development
Training
Internal training
To support and encourage impact development, the Impact team offers bespoke training workshops, surgeries, and 1-2-1s to researchers across the University. Departmental or School-specific invitations will usually be shared by UoA leads and Impact Development Managers.
The Research Impact Seminar Series 2024-2025 will cover topics including "Working with Archives" and "Public Engagement", featuring expert internal and external speakers. Register for the series, and other University-wide Impact training events, on the Impact SharePoint (University log-in required).
We also offer introductory impact modules for PhD students and early career researchers, delivered with the Doctoral Research College. These sessions support researchers to identify impact pathways and explore working with external partners to create impact. Explore the Doctoral Research College (DRC) training opportunities for ECRs/ PhD students.
External training
We recommend the following external, self-led courses:
- Research Impact: Making a Difference: Online only free course that is pre-recorded (not live). In 4 hours per week, for 3 weeks, this course from the University of Glasgow provides bite-sized videos, long- and short-form articles, audio, and practical activities. There is a free course open to all and FutureLearn is available to all UoR staff. Note that the course is timed, such that you can only complete one 4 hour module each week.
- Fast Track Impact: Introduction to Impact: This free online course can be started at any time and consists of an introduction and five weekly steps. Each step includes a video and a short reading and takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete. At the end of each step, tasks are set which can be completed within your specific area of research before moving on to the next section.
Development: Ethics Community of Practice
The Impact Team and academics have created a Community of Practice on Ethics in Impact to review current guidance and standards for the ethics of our impact activities, ethics of working with external stakeholders, plus evidence collection for REF2029, including GDPR compliance. Join the "Impact Ethics" group on Teams (University log-in required).Impact training on UoRLearn (Summer 2025 project - link forthcoming)
