Background
Mario Guido is a Lecturer in Criminal Law at the University of Reading. His research interests lie at the intersection of criminal law, criminal justice and labour law, with a particular focus on prison labour, rehabilitation, punishment and the involvement of private actors in criminal justice.
His doctoral research at University College London examined the organisation and regulation of prison labour in England and Wales, France and Germany, exploring the relationship between prison work, labour rights, rehabilitation and the role of private actors in punishment. His research draws on doctrinal, comparative and socio-legal approaches.
He has also contributed to a British Academy-funded research project examining prison work and reintegration in Europe, working with colleagues on research concerning prison work, human rights and reintegration.
He has previous teaching experience at University College London and Oxford Brookes University, where he taught Criminal Law and contributed to dissertation supervision and personal academic tutoring. He is an Associate Fellow of Advance HE (AFHEA).
Prior to entering academia, Mario worked in research and policy roles in the fields of immigration detention and human rights, including at International Detention Coalition (IDC), the Global Detention Project (GDP) and Children and Families Across Borders (CFAB).
