Areas of interest
Adam’s general research focus is on the interplay between criminal law, morality policies, and broader governance theories. His work on assisted dying has been cited and recognised for ‘its important empirical dimension’ by the Dutch Supreme Court and listed on the European Parliament's selected reading on 'Assisted Dying in the EU and Beyond'. He has also provided evidence, upon invitation, to the UK and Irish Parliament on comparative regulatory approaches to end-of-life law.
Adam embraces both a three-dimensional approach to comparative law (internal, external, and critical) and an interdisciplinary one - integrating an analysis of the real dimension of law on end-of-life medical decisions with relevant aspects of political science, criminology, medical sociology, and moral philosophy. Adam’s research experience extends beyond the topic of assisted dying. He has published on patient safety in wider end-of-life care (Edward Elgar), fundamental rights and humaneness in EU law (Cambridge University Press), immoral contracts (Intersentia), non-contractual liability for defective property (European Review of Private Law), Ireland in the EU (Oxford: Hart Publishing), and broader law and governance theories (Eleven International). He has contributed to The Times Higher Education, The Conversation, The Irish Times, and has been interviewed on BBC Television, BBC Radio, LBC Radio, and Irish national radio in relation to the law on assisted dying.
Teaching
Adam teaches on a variety of modules, including Criminal Law, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Medical Law, and Legal Skills.
Background
Adam McCann joined the University of Reading in 2023 as an Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, having previously served as a Lecturer at the University of Exeter. He is also the Deputy Director of Recruitment and Admissions for Law at Reading.
Academic qualifications
Adam holds a PhD in law from the University of Groningen and an LL.M from Utrecht University and held Visiting Fellowships at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Cambridge. In 2017 Adam was appointed as one of the editors of the European Journal of Comparative Law and Governance.
