Research Life In Pictures Competition

About the competition

The Graduate School Research Life in Pictures competition has been established to encapsulate the 'human side' of the doctoral journey. We are inviting current Reading doctoral researchers to submit a picture which offers an insight into the everyday life of a doctoral researcher. If your picture is shortlisted it will be displayed at the University of Reading Doctoral Research Conference on 20 June 2017. The competition will be judged by a panel drawn from the University of Reading's research community. The winner chosen by the Judging Panel will receive an award of £100. The winner of the People's Choice Award voted for by conference delegates will receive £50.

Research Life in Pictures Competition 2017

research life in pictures 2017 winner

2017 was the first year we had staged the Research Life in Pictures Competition and our winning entry was submitted by James Lloyd, a doctoral researcher in Classics. James's entry was entitled 'Steps and Mountains'. The image was accompanied by the following text:

In the foreground to this picture, steps lead up to St.Nikon's Basillica on the Spartan acropolis, while in the background the mighty Taygetus mountain range looms. Taken on a research trip to Sparta in February 2017, the image symbolizes the small goals and far away ambitions faced on my doctoral journey. For me, one of these steps was getting to Sparta and being given permission to study materials in the museum there, a step that gets me closer, slowly but surely, to the far-off mountain peak, even if sometimes it might seem obscured in a layer of cloud.
