Art & Design

The interview may involve a number of candidates and will be conducted remotely via Microsoft Teams.

Prior to interview

  • Plan a brief presentation of your own art and design practice. This should include images of your own work, and any art or design that you may have made with children. The presentation should be no more than five minutes long. You may use PowerPoint or other presentation formats, or you may wish to show real objects or pieces of art that you have made.

The remote interview process

Your interview will start with an introduction by Melanie Jay (the subject leader for PGCE Secondary Art & Design).

You will then be given five minutes to talk through your presentation of your own art and design practice with the subject leader, following the advice given above.

You will then be asked a series of formal questions which will explore your motivations for becoming a teacher, your passion for teaching Art and Design, and look to draw upon your subject knowledge and specialisms. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions. This should take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Written task

Immediately after the formal interview, an email will be sent to you containing the following:

  • A short written task intended to assess your English fluency and your thoughts on an aspect of art and design. This should take approximately 20-30 minutes. The written task can be handwritten or completed electronically.
  • A short observational drawing task.

The written task and the observational drawing task should be completed and returned to Melanie Jay within one hour. Once completed, please send high-quality scans of your written task (if handwritten) and your observational drawing task to Melanie at:m.b.jay@reading.ac.uk

If you choose to complete the written task electronically, you can return your written task to Melanie electronically.

Please feel free to contact Melanie should you have any questions.

If your/our network does not behave, please do not panic! We will email you using the addresses given in your application and we will make a contingency plan.
