The Institute of Education at the University of Reading works in partnership with more than 400 schools and early years settings across the Thames Valley and beyond to support the training and development of future teachers.

Our partnerships are central to our teacher training programmes. Working closely with schools and settings enables our trainees to gain high-quality experience in the classroom while bringing new ideas, knowledge and skills into schools.

Our partnership

Our partner schools and settings play an important role in the training of future teachers. Through school-based placements, trainees work alongside experienced teachers and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to begin their teaching careers.

University tutors work closely with schools and settings throughout the placement, providing support to trainees and their mentors and helping to ensure a high-quality training experience.

We value the contribution of our partnership schools and settings and are committed to developing strong, collaborative relationships that benefit trainees, schools and the wider education community.

Benefits of partnership

Working with the Institute of Education provides schools and settings with opportunities to contribute to teacher training while developing their own staff and strengthening their future workforce.

Our partnership provides opportunities to:

  • host trainee teachers and support their development through school-based experience
  • identify and recruit talented future teachers who have trained within your school or setting
  • contribute to the recruitment process for teacher training
  • access professional development and support for mentors
  • develop mentoring, leadership and coaching skills within your staff
  • bring new knowledge, ideas and approaches into your school or setting
  • engage with the University’s wider education community, including opportunities relating to research, events and professional development.

Supporting the next generation of teachers

Our partnership extends beyond the initial training year. Many teachers who train with us go on to begin their careers in their placement schools and settings, while others continue to contribute to teacher education as mentors and Initial Teacher Education Coordinators.

Our partnership schools and settings also have opportunities to engage with further study and professional development through the University of Reading.

Lead Partner opportunities

Schools can also take on a greater role in teacher training through our Lead Partner arrangements.

Lead Partners work closely with the Institute of Education to support the delivery and recruitment of teacher training programmes, providing an additional opportunity for schools to contribute to the development of future teachers.

Climate and sustainability education

At the University of Reading, we believe climate and sustainability education is everyone's responsibility. Our vision is for all student teachers to develop the knowledge and skills to incorporate climate education into their teaching across all phases and subjects.

As part of their teacher training, our student teachers explore:

  • climate change and how to teach climate and sustainability in age-appropriate and accessible ways
  • climate justice and the impact of environmental and climate change on individuals and communities
  • how to translate knowledge and theory into action through planning, teaching and children's learning.
