Supporting and Normalising LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Schools is a free online course hosted on the social learning platform, FutureLearn.

The course has been developed with teachers, senior leaders, and school staff in mind. It is ideal for those who want to expand their understanding of LGBTQ+ inclusion in education and work collaboratively to create welcoming, safe, and supportive environments for all children and young people.

This course is led by Rebecca Harris from the Institute of Education, University of Reading and draws on research-informed practice and real-world experiences from education settings.

The course explores how schools can actively support and normalise LGBTQ+ inclusion, and how systemic inequalities within education can affect LGBTQ+ pupils and staff.

Drawing on practical examples and reflective activities, participants will explore how discrimination, bias, and micro-aggressions can appear in school settings and how educators can respond with confidence and care.

The course also supports participants to reflect on their own practice and school context, helping them to embed inclusive teaching approaches, curriculum design, and whole-school culture change.

Course participants will explore topics such as:

  • what LGBTQ+ inclusion means in educational contexts
  • how systematic inequalities impact LGBTQ+ pupils and staff
  • recognising and responding to discriminatory behaviour and micro-aggressions
  • embedding LGBTQ+ inclusive practices within teaching, curriculum, and school culture
  • fostering allyship, belonging, and wellbeing across school communities.

The course provides plenty of opportunities for participants to engage with others through course discussions. Learners can reflect on what the learning means in their own setting and share experiences, ideas, and strategies for creating inclusive school environments.

Through reflection and discussion, participants will develop a personalised action plan to support LGBTQ+ inclusion and drive sustainable, positive change in their classroom, school, or professional setting.
