Happy, engaged children in a classroom environment

Anti-racist Teaching in Schools is a free online course hosted on the social learning platform, FutureLearn.

The course has been developed with teachers, senior leaders, and school staff in mind. It is ideal for those who want to deepen their understanding of how racism operates in education and work collaboratively to create safer, more equitable learning environments for all children and young people.

This course is led by Suzy Tutchell from the Institute of Education, University of Reading, and draws on research-informed practice and real-world experiences from education settings.

The course explores how racism and bias can be embedded within education systems, classroom practices, and school cultures, and how educators can take meaningful action to address them.

Drawing on practical examples and reflective activities, participants will explore the principles of anti-racist practice, build confidence in recognising and challenging bias, and develop strategies for engaging in constructive and courageous conversations about race.

The course also supports participants to reflect on their own practice and school context, helping them to embed inclusive approaches within teaching, curriculum design, and wider school culture.

Course participants will explore topics such as:

  • what anti-racist teaching means in school and classroom contexts
  • how racism and bias can operate within education systems and everyday practice
  • recognising and challenging prejudice and discrimination
  • engaging confidently in conversations about race
  • embedding inclusive approaches within curriculum, teaching, and school culture.

The course provides plenty of opportunities for participants to engage with others through course discussions. Learners can reflect on what the learning means in their own setting and share experiences, ideas, and strategies for addressing racism and promoting equity in schools.
