At the present time we are adapting our School to provide a supportive and flexible learning environment for you, with appropriate social distancing measures in place to protect the health and wellbeing of our students and staff. Our teaching methods

Lectures

Our academics write the textbooks and journal papers from which you will study.  

When you attend their lectures, you’ll get direct access to the latest thinking across a broad range of individual subject areas. 

Study/research time

When not attending taught sessions on campus, you'll learn through guided reading and work with online resources in our professional virtual learning environment. 

You'll have the opportunity to pursue your own research interests when you write your dissertation.

Group work

During class sessions, you'll engage with fellow students on exciting assignments that reflect the collaborative nature of working in industry. 

You'll hone skills that are essential to working effectively with practitioners across the built environment sector. You'll learn how to analyse and discuss complex challenges from different viewpoints, and build leadership skills.


Grounded in practice

You'll engage directly with industry and practice as part of your studies.

Site visits and field trips

You'll gain insights into real working environments and be exposed to cutting-edge industry practice.

Real projects and case studies

You'll examine real-life challenges in the built environment and apply theory to practical problem-solving.

Guest speakers

Experts from industry are actively engaged with our courses. They bring current and topical insights from a range of specialisms to broaden your knowledge.

I really liked the fact that the MSc had a strong connection with the industry. It meant that we constantly used industrial reports in our learning and had lectures from professionals in the industry. I especially enjoyed going on site visits, where I got to see how the technologies I learned about in the classroom were implemented on an industrial scale.

Collaborating across disciplines

You'll benefit from studying within the larger School of the Built Environment, which brings Construction Management and Engineering together with Architecture. We also have close links with the department of Real Estate and Planning within Henley Business School. 

As part of our interdisciplinary approach, we place emphasis on understanding the broader context. You'll develop understanding of the application of social sciences to construction projects.

Research-led teaching

All our academics are active in research as well as teaching. Our areas of research expertise include building and urban environment quality, urban green infrastructure, energy systems, and behaviour, among others. 

This research feeds directly into our teaching, so you'll have access to the latest thinking.
