In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, 100% of the University of Reading's research in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning is rated of international standing (REF 2021, combining 4*, 3* and 2* submissions), and 100% of our research impact in the same Unit of Assessment has been classed ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ (REF 2021, combining 4* and 3* submissions).

The University is also ranked 6th in the UK for research power in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning (Times Higher Education, Institutions Ranked by Subject, based on its analysis of the latest REF 2021).

We'll support you to develop your teaching skills and gain experience that will prepare you for a career in academia. We offer opportunities to teach on undergraduate modules and supervise undergraduate projects in the School.

As a doctoral student at Reading, you can also attend the Doctoral and Researcher College's Preparing to Teach programme at no extra cost.

Research activity in the School of the Built Environment is organised into three research groups: 

• Energy and Environmental Engineering
• Organisations, People and Technology
• Urban Systems.
   

These interdisciplinary groups bring together colleagues across the School to participate in a number of activities, which our PhD students can utilise during their time at Reading.
