Museums, libraries, special collections and archives

The University of Reading's Special Collections Services give access to collections of rare books, archives and manuscripts, and the Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) library and archives. There may be some charges for this service, as follows:

  • The Special Collections Services provide free access to original records or copies of records in their Reading Room.
  • They may charge a fee to carry out the research necessary to tell you whether or not they hold specific information. They also charge for copies of documents. The fees are set out in Facilities at Special Collections Services. If your enquiry relates to records likely to be available for general access they also provide details of how to find independent researchers who, on payment of a fee agreed with you, will undertake this research.
  • Most records are available for general access but a few are closed in whole or in part because information in them is exempt information under the FOI Act or the Environmental Information Regulations. Disclosures will be reviewed on request. There is no charge for this review.
  • Enquiries and requests for review of closed records should be sent to Special Collections Services.
