Research Statement

My main research interests lie in Early Modern relogious and cultural history, particularly the Reformation in England and Europe.  After completing a study of clerical marriage in the era of the Reformation, my recent research has focused upon Reformation perceptions of the medieval past, with a particular interest in the lives of the saints and the English Church, and attitudes to miracles and magic in the early modern period.  Current projects include a history of clerical celibacy in the west, under contract with Ashgate, and an edition of the selected works of the English Protestant polemicist John Bale.  I am also co-editing a volume of essays exploring concepts of authority in the Reformation.
