Department of History
The study of history offers unique insights into the richness and variety of the human experience.
Defined by our pursuit of educational excellence and research innovation, our courses offer the opportunity to unlock people, places and perspectives otherwise impossible to access in a lifetime.
Help to shape the world through exploration of humanity's diverse past in a way that suits you. Whether it's taking one of our exciting undergraduate degrees, furthering your skills and experience through one of our postgraduate courses, or contributing to our outstanding research, you will be part of an inclusive community that shares your passion and enables you to pursue your personal interests.
”A history degree at the University of Reading will allow you to be creative in your writing and to think outside the box. You gain a deeper appreciation of the skills and approaches needed to succeed, not only in academia, but also in the wider world.”
study: Open the door of curiosity and enquiry
We enable you to discover and follow your passion. Our modules span a vast breadth of history, both geographically - from British, European, and Atlantic to non-Western history - and chronologically, covering the last thousand years from medieval times to the modern day. Our extensive options allow you to either pursue your specific interests, or to experience a wide range of history.
TEACHING: quality learning delivered by experts
Award-winning teaching is at the heart of what we do. Our staff are frequently nominated for Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) Teaching Awards and in the latest National Student Survey (2020), 96% of our students agreed that the staff are good at explaining things in the Department of History. (For more details, ask us at www.reading.ac.uk/question.)
research: at the cutting-edge of history
Don't simply study history; become a historian. We are a research-led department, whose academics are actively researching and contributing to current academic debates, incorporating their research into their teaching - and we want you to be part of this. Contribute your knowledge, and help shape the way we see the world.
